  1. None... you don't need to know any programming to land a programming job. You can sit there and do nothing for months before getting fired usually. Trust me, I work with them all the time. Some of them ask lots of questions and eventually catch on. Most dont.

    um... no... he wants to give more of YOUR money away. The alternative would likely be an increase in income taxes which would likely be progressive and come directly out of his pocket. A gas tax is applied to everyone equally based on their gasoline use.

    Yea, I remember having an argument about this with one of those guys that has to buy everything that's new in home entertainment. He had his brand new $800 15" LCD monitor and was telling me how it didn't have a refresh rate, only CRTs did. "That's silly, why would an LCD have a refresh rate?!?" he lamented. Because that's how CRT's worked for the past 30 years so that's how they designed LCDs. If it isn't broke, don't fix it is every engineers mantra. It's when marketing shows up and tells you they need a reason to get people to buy their stuff rather than someone else's that the engineers start thinking "Well, we could do something about that legacy sync thing..."

    There will likely be no visible difference between the 2 to 99% of the population... just like most new display options. I suspect Nvidia introduced this as a way to be different and AMD realized it would be pretty easy to do it basically for free and released their open version to neutralize any market advantage Nvidia would have because of it. You also don't want your competitor to set a closed standard you'll eventually have to pay them for.

    Once again, everyone uses their own biased sources. You're both wrong. The only ice that matters is the ice that was ON LAND before and is now IN THE OCEAN and bellow the water line. Does melting ice in a glass of water raise the level of water in the glass? No. Put a new ice cube in, does the water level raise equivalent to the volume of ice? No. It raises equivalent to the volume of ice bellow the water line.

    What volume of ice was their on the land 100 years ago? No one knows. There's no way to find out. Probably more than there is now. The truth is probably more on the side of people concerned about climate change and less on the side of the people who deny it. That said, things aren't nearly as bad as the alarmists would have you think. This is something we should address, but stupid knee jerk reactions based on made up science are what alienates people and gives the deniers an excuse to stall and do nothing. Lets have real facts, and common sense so we can address a growing problem that will hurt our great grandchildren.

    Apparently you've never worked for a union. You just pass your power on to the union, whose best interest is the union, not you. I'm not against organized labor, but unions in this country are usually even worse than they corporations they are supposed to protect you against.

    I've worked for 3 different union shops in my time and they were all the same. Got seniority? You can't get fired... ever. People would come in drunk and the UAW would protect them. We had teams of people that sat reading books at a picnic table all day just in case someone went home sick, they were making $25/hr to do that. I also worked for AT&T. At one point I had a customer having a problem with a particular database. It was outside my normal functions but they were dead in the water and the department that was supposed to handle it wasn't returning their calls. I fixed it, got commended by management. A month later I had a union grievance filed against me for doing the work someone else should have done. They actually tried to fine me. Luckily I got a new job before they could complete the case and I just told them to stuff it when they decided against me.

    This is all anecdotal personal experience so take it with a grain of salt. Maybe I just had bad luck. But I'm done with unions.

    Now try and feed the world with them rather than half a dozen villages. Its all fine and dandy for people with so much disposable income that they can throw money at feel good food. Even worst is that there is really not data to even back up the feel good claims.

    Right, I do the same stuff this guy does but for fun. I currently have 3ft Tomato plants in Zone 5 and it's may! (bragging) But I have no delusions about my techniques working well enough to feed the entire population. It would drive the cost of food up several orders of magnitude. I'm able to grow enough for my family and to give to food banks, but total collapse of the system is entirely possible. If the wrong pest takes hold, I'm screwed for the summer. Last year we had a crazy overpopulation of rabbits, which I'm already protecting my crops from with some clever fencing. But the rabbits got flees and were so abundant my animals got the flees... then I got the flees. It was terrible. Once you have flees in your bed, pesticides don't seem so bad. But more importantly I just started shooting all the rabbits. The hippie lady next door was pissed, but whatever. You can never make a hippie happy. Long story short, I ate a lot of rabbit over the winter. The cycle of life and all that.

    The neonicotinoids have been seen as a great advancement in insecticides because they are toxic to insects, but much less so to mammals. Compare them with chemicals like DDT, which are effective against insects, but kill the higher orders in the food chain that eat them.

    The problem with them is that they are extremely effective at disrupting bees - about 1/150 of the dose needed to kill other insects is enough to confuse bees. And the products are advertised as rose and garden insecticides, which are naturally attractive to bees. It only takes a few bees worth of nectar gathering to bring down a colony.

    Which makes it interesting. CCD has been shown to be far less prevalent in Urban areas where these very plants are often found.

    You know what else would work? Ticket cyclists just like you do cars.

    I live at the intersection of about 4 major bike paths in my city and cyclists careless disregard for cars, pedestrians, other cyclists and even their own safety is at times shocking. I've seen them blow through their own bike path stop signs into heavy traffic then get off their bikes and harass drivers that honk when they do it. I'm not sure how we got to the point where cyclists have this ridiculous attitude but it's really coming to a head where I live.

    I can show them pretty consistent scientific studies that show people like being VALUED by their employer. And while it's true, there is a threshold for wealth that once you've gone over it, further raises have little impact on their dedication to work, there's is also a lower threshold where if they are consistently under paid, they'll also feel as if they're not valued.

    TED had an interest one on this once. Turns out that over paying can be worse than under paying, when it comes to productivity that requires almost any amount of creativity. People like to be paid a "fair" amount and they like to feel useful and making a difference.

    Right. But I'm not sure it's that strait forward. I think its the lack of appreciation combined with being over paid. If you don't feel your employer values your work, AND the employer is paying more than the what you think you should make, how much would you expect them to pay you to do work that they actually did value? Most important at any job is to feel valued. I don't care if you're digging ditches, if there's a guy coming in behind you and filling that ditch back in right after you dig it you're not going to try all that hard even if you're getting paid $50k/yr. If they doubled your salary to $100k would it make you dig any faster?

    Can someone explain to me what dumping piles and piles of computers into Africa is going to accomplish?

    In Africa I see waves of ethnic turmoil coupled with basic infrastructure problems, all played by the governments to keep a few powerful folks in power.

    Are we trying to turn Africa into our next call center and need to get the kids up to speed with computers? I don't think that is going to happen until something resembling stability (i.e. taking care of food, clothing and shelter for entire years without fear of a machete attack) takes hold.

    Congratulations on never have been to Africa. I had the same attitude as you until I went myself. Africans, in general, are extremely nice people (granted, I only met a few hundred of the untold multitudes) Far more genial than anyone in the west. Their continent boasts one of the most diverse populations on earth. While they are all "Black" they are subdivided into hundreds of small ethnic groups. Look at an Ethiopian and a South African and it becomes immediately apparent that they are both about as different as the Japanese are from Americans. Despite all of this they have relatively few disputes.

    Unfortunately, as is with most ethinic wars, the west has decided to step in and save them. As a result wester powers fight proxy wars through Africa. Each opposing western power funds warlords they think they can control. Furnishing them with money and guns. Eventually the warlords do what warlords do and commit atrosities. The west pretends to be appalled and goes on funding the war, trying to rig progress in that country to lead to their desired outcome.

    Africa is an amazing place. You should go. You wont die, people there are nice and will look out for you. $100 cash will buy you damn near anything on the continent so it'll be a cheap trip. I highly recommend it. It was life changing for me.

    Most. I'm a pretty big advocate of the idea that happy people are more productive people. Every place I've worked at I end up on whatever "Improve everyones view of work!" committee they have. This usually means I get to have meetings with CEO's and VP's about how to get people to like their jobs better. The nonsense those people come up with is crazy.

    It's pretty typical that we'll have a few meetings where the VP wont even bother to read the minuets... then suddenly they appear one day out of the blue and it's inevitable that they have some trade magazine in tow that states that it's finally definitive! Workers don't really like money! What they like is company sponsored jogs before they clock it! or A plaque that rotates between team members to recognize special achievement! It never dawns on these 6 or 7 figure business geniuses that they've fallen for the typical "Tell them what they want to hear" nonsense that Seventeen magazine fools teenage girls with every day.

    The most important thing to convey to an employee is that they are important to the companies goals. They are valued and trusted. If none of those things are true then fire them, they're going to cost you more money than they'll make. Even a data entry person can do nothing all day if they really don't give a shit about your opinion anymore.

    My goals when in such groups is to get management to understand this. To make it obvious the company needs it's people. To not only value them, but value their entire family. Good health insurance. Programs for family members to deal with mental health issues, child care, etc... Then some big ticket things. Re-reimbursement for rare disabilities and such. You can do that and maybe a couple of your employees will take advantage of the programs. But the other 1000 employees will see that and think to themselves "Wow, that's great. If I leave and go work at that other place for $10k a year more, will they care about me that much?" Granted, in the grand scheme of things they probably will. But perception is reality.

    When your company has a major outage that costs a couple of hundred grand an hour while it's down, and a little known employee rises to the top and fixes it in a very creative way most executives will tell their manager to do something like give them a $50 gift card to Starbucks. How do you think that employee feels about that given that they're well aware of how much they just saved you? You know what's cheaper? Get off your ass, walk down there, and say "John, we really appreciate what you did last night. Really, personally, thank you. If you need to leave a little early today you go ahead, your manager told me how late you were up. Good job." That employee will be glued to that chair for the next 6 months guaranteed. Yet this never, ever, happens.

    I would like to be able to make untraceable prank calls, where I can call anyone and have the phone number show up as whatever number I choose. Or not show up at all - for things like prank calls or ransom demands or confidentail informant. I would like this feature to be able to turned on or off. In software, not with a hardware switch. This is a very important feature for me.

    You can already do that. Sign up for just about any online voip service out there and all of this is very easy. How do you think the telemarketers pull it off?

    Generally a custom CMS offers better flexibility - if you have a competent web staff that knows how to code, you can get something slick finished pretty quickly.

    True. But where I work, we plan for everything. Like upper management firing most of our "Competent web staff" Who's going to support your custom code then? If you're using an industry standard, it may not be as flexible but if the shit hits the fan at least you can pull in contractors and not have to rely on what would basically amount to the top tier of web developers out there as your only hiring resource. Use Joomla (or whatever) and you have an immediate pool of talent to hire from.
