    We needed a book that taught programmers proper hygiene. I have often come close to collapsing when the terrifying stench of an unclean coder has hit my nostrils. I know at least a dozen people I will give this book to along with a good scrub brush.

    Walmart doesn't go out of its way to promote any of the products it sells. All they care is that you buy something at Walmart. Why should Verizon be any different. If iphones and androids are selling like hotcakes why should they spend advertising money to canabalize their sales.

    I have been using ixquick. I like that it doesn't keep any data on you. You can even set it to use https so that noone else is snooping on your searches.

    I have more respect for Microsoft. Microsoft never pretends to be anything other than a corporation trying to maximize profits. Google try to pose as friend by supporting some open source projects, but when it comes to issues like sucking up to the Chinese, censorship, and net neutrality we see their true colors.

    "Spec#", the proof system for C#, was a research result

    Pretty sad that decades of $500M a year have led to the "innovation" of stealing a language feature of Eiffel and putting it into a Java clone.

    Another effort in that area involved automated verification of Windows drivers [microsoft.com] to determine if they could crash the rest of the OS. That paid off. In Windows 7, every driver has to pass the static verifier before it gets signed

    Nice. A lint tool for drivers.

    I wish that was true. But I come to work and wait 5 minutes every morning to open up my email in Lotus Notes. We used to use Outlook which was decently snappy. Lotus Notes is commonly referred to as Scrotus Notes, Scrotum Nuts, etc., at work.

    We don't have "Cold War" with China.

    Considering the rich usually run their respective countries, a good precursor to war is economic conflict. And right now the US and China are in a currency war.

    No, it's something that is resonant with people that want to suppress speech. Look at recent articles and you will see similar lame excuses (ie. stopping terror, child porn, copyright protection) for allowing the NSA/FBI/etc to spy on citizens or try to take down their computers.

    Linkedin are just a bunch of scummy spammers. I blocked all email from their domain since.

    That's not enough. Headhunters are going to continue to call you at work. They see where you are working and then just call your company's operator asking for you. Once you put your information on Linkedin it is for sale to anyone that pays them for it.

    I'll believe that the courts will side against a powerful and politically well-connected company like Google when I see it. The tech industry has bribed Congress well enough that I think they will be protected.

    Yeah the EPA sure did a good job not accepting bribes from BP and kept them from causing an ecological disaster

    Girl just got raped and killed by a convicted child sex offender. Guy slipped through the cracks because the police have a couple guys keeping track of rapists and murderers out on parole, but they have a massive army out on the roads with their radar guns to rape and pillage tax paying citizens. They do this for 2 reasons: 1) cops are cowards and know that criminals are dangerous, so it's easier to go after law abiding people 2) its a chance to rip more money out of people to pay for their own pensions

    Providing impartial justice

    ROFL. How much money did Ken Lay's estate have to pay..oh yeah, nothing. How many days in jail did Ted Kennedy spend in jail after boozing himself up, driving a car into lake, killing a woman, and fleeing the scene of an accident? 0 days. I paid more than either of them when I had to pay my overnight parking ticket (good thing that cop was there to ticket me instead of looking for criminals.)

    Maybe you are lucky to be in an area without moochers. I never even bother going to the Cafe at the local B&N's. Things are full of people doing their homework or reading magazines. It's getting so bad that now people are starting to camp out spots on the floor in less traveled areas to do their homework. I think there are a lot of paying customers like me that take their business elsewhere because there is never a seat. If they were more aggressive in chasing moochers out, their business would be better.

    The problem is that it isn't a competition between Windows and Linux, or Apple and Windows. You buy an operating system based on the applications you want to run. If you are a gamer, more likely than not you will be buying Microsoft so that you can play the games that only run under Windows. For work I am forced to run Windows since there are too many compilers/cad tools/etc that only run under Windows.

    I will use a good old car analogy. There is no reason that driving on the left side of the road is any better or any worse than driving on the right side of the road. But if everyone else is driving on the left side of the road, then you have your work cut out for you if you prefer driving on the right side of the road.

    God I wish both Republicans AND Democrats would shut up. Both parties accept huge bribes (campaign contributions) in exchange for votes. There is always a shameful deficit no matter who is in power (don't get started with Clinton and his raiding of Social Security to make the budget look balanced. No matter who is in charge, the army is out invading some new country: Somalia, Kosovo, Iraq, Panama, etc.

    This dumb Democrat healthcare bill is just as big a coporate handout to the pharmaceutical and insurance companies as the Republican prescription drug plan.

    So in summary: If you live on every word of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity OR Jon Stewart, Keith Olberman, etc, you are all equally stupid.
