  1. Re:The money on The 700MHz Question · · Score: 1

The FCC could use this money to provide more free, or at least less expensive, analog to digital TV converter boxers for those who will need them when (if?) the analog stream is finally turned off.

  2. What groups? on Satellite Images Used to Monitor Burmese Junta · · Score: 1

Anyone know who these human rights groups are, and how they got access to such satellite imaging? Are these groups funded by the UN? Or are they just reporting to the UN on images they somehow got? If the groups are legit, the UN will at least let them plead their cases.

  3. Re:Good or bad? on Chicago Developing 'Suspicious Behavior' Monitoring System · · Score: 1

"impressively Orwellian and unnecessary" as it may be, monitoring systems like this are the wave of the future. Every big city, if it doesn't already, will have a system like this in place within the next 5 years (assuming they can afford it, so maybe not so much in Detroit). At this point it wouldn't make sense NOT to. Systems such as these, if used properly (The Departed, anyone?), can be a huge help to law enforcement. Legally if you're in public you give away that right to privacy, and at this point people should know they are being monitored mostly everywhere they go (stores, shopping malls, gas stations, etc) anyway. If you had just been robbed, hit by a car, etc, wouldn't it be nice to know the whole thing was caught on tape when you went to court? As technology advances, so too will systems like these, no matter the cries of big brother.

  4. Manhunt 2 on Jack Thompson Sets His Sights On Halo 3 · · Score: 1

If Mr. Thompson really wanted to have his case considered, he might try going after a game that is getting some really, really negative attention from parental watchdog groups. This game of course would be Manhunt 2, which, if anything like it predecessor, is excessively, even sickeningly violent. I stopped playing it due to the violence, and I was 20 years old. If children get their hands on that game, the images they see could do real harm, unlike the ones in Halo 3, which depict violence against aliens, not people. If he wants help in his cause, he should at least make the game he goes after a justifiable target.
