  1. IBM of the '80s on IBM's Dirty Ad Tactics Bother SF Officials · · Score: 1

There was a saying back then: "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM." Probably true. I started coding asm I/O modules on 168s and 370s in '83 for PMSC. IBM was big, brutal, and as bad as MS is alledged today. They were a marketing company that happened to sell computers, etc. Then hey got their fannys smacked by the PC revolution and have managed to make a huge turn. Because they're a big corp, they think like one.

Don't they have a department working on Apache? At least Open Source can be talked about in their halls. It is openly supported.

This is a cute campain; unthinkable for them in the '80s. Assuming this paint will wash off, I'd pay the advert agency's bill. The news medias are going to give them lots of free exposure.

  2. We have not earned our Rights on Free Republic v. Aldridge · · Score: 1

We have not earned our Rights. These are god-given; inherited by being. We, and our fore-fathers (and fore-mothers :), have fought to keep this assumption valid. Any limit to these has to be earned.

In this case, where people are disruptive to the site may have earned a limit. When the topic is ignored and postings are made only to disrupt the flow of dialog, it is my most humble opinion that limits are permissable.

Second, his Aldridge seems to have released private information about the site's caretakers. This is a direct invasion. Can this be covered by stalking laws? (I don't think he'll be charged w/ stalking because one of his followers could have visited the Hair home and reported findings.)

Third, Robinson, et al. own the site and can ban anyone they want. Is the ban for a particular UserID or the human behind it? In this case, it is for the human. After so many IDs, this Aldridge didn't leave them alone. Maybe, this can be covered by stalking laws, too...

Several years (maybe 20?) I read a book with the premise that all of the oil we're taking out of the ground has caused the earth to start wobbling. The solution, I think, was to anchor a bunch of oil tankers in the right places around the oceans. It was a good read. The preface to this book stated "If you think about it....don't."

I finally got a TV after 15 yrs just to see what is on. Normally, I'd say "60+ channels of nothing". I was channel surfing during the Daytona 24-hr and stopped to see what this XFL was about.

Very nearly went on when I saw McMahon's face. His wrestling show is so against my ethics and moral standards that... But I stayed long enough to see the 'coin toss' twixt LV and NY. I liked it! I Finally saw an interesting football game. Hard hits, kicks and punts returned, even a helmet or 2 knocked off. Sure the player comments were dumb, they're in battle. Sure they missed a lot of passes; watch an early season NFL game for more of the same. The adds weren't as bad as the Superbowls, either.

As for your "The range of camera angles was exciting but dizzying and confusing. ", Have you ever tried to watch Riverdance on tape? At least here, I could catch a breath between most of the camera changes.

  8. Re:Why is the war still raging? on "Traffic" · · Score: 2

The war, IMHO, is not about drugs. It is a cover to allow/give our government the power to intrude into our lives and develop the systems and technologies to do so. With the assistance of the media, they/we can maintain taboos on sex and drugs. This puts a lot of money into the coffers of those that benefit from the technologies and systems. This includes industries running the gambit from private jailers to camera makers.

Each show does resolve a central issue every time but leaves consitant viewers something to come back for. There is a whole lot of development.
