  1. The facts are... on Fraud Rampant In Apple Pay · · Score: 1

Fraudsters find the weakest link to exploit, in this case it is the issuers (which there are 100s btw) in the US. Apple Pay, just like EMV, is a secure _platform_, so therefore, if implemented properly can be used to combat fraud. If as an issuer you are accepting Apply Pay as a secure platform and do not complete the necessary quality checks to ensure the loaded card is not compromised you become the weakest link. I do not understand why people are calling for Apple Pay to increase the level of checks required when it is the issuing banks laziness to implement proper controls in order to increase their speed to market. It is not until we have a market-wide dynamic CVV (or like technology) available will we never see fraud virtually disappear. The fact is that issuers need more stringent controls in place in how the authorize a card into Apple Pay and two-factor authentication is a sure way to do it. Relying on information like social security numbers, address, location, etc. is no longer secure enough.

The internet makes it easier for people to find music, but still not at the scale radio play will get them. If an artist signs onto a big label such as Universal, and the label buys them radio time, they will become popular.

To get to my point, this model may be innovative and inspiring, but it isn't going to work for Joe band that records in their basement and tries to market their album for free or pay.

From my understanding, this patent was over a user being able to be "multiple types" (anyone can come up with this imo). Allowing stupid patent cases like this just promotes monopolization of markets, and thus everyone gets the short end of the stick.

This article just further frustrates me, and as an unfortunate forced user of blackboard (Computer Science student) I am pained to see competition shut down.

How are universities suppose to give their faculty members and grad/undergrads proper software to utilize, if no competition for the market exists or can exist.

I can agree that if one provider was to do this, it would be singled out.. in fact AT&T have been discussing just this option... However, my argument is that with increased bandwidth demands that eventually become greater than the threshold ALL ISP's can provide, then a step would have to be taken.. a huge complaint among most people towards their ISP's is reliability and speed.. both of which are being affected by services such as torrents and video hosting sites like YouTube. If not throttling, then charging more for a connection that can download X amount of data.. -- or preferably, caching data to make it less of a demand pull.. I don't believe we will ever get to a point where internet will be unusable; but as it becomes easier to reach to a wider range of people, and the data sent/received becomes larger.. the demand on each ISP will increase.

  7. As a University Student... on Leaked MediaDefender Emails Show Student P2P Traffic Down · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have been downloading using the Gnutella network, newsgroups, usenet, and torrents since early highschool.. but I am an exception; being a computer science major.

Gnutella market became huge when I was in highschool.. which was Napster... that is when most students learned and starting using this tool. It has really been the last few years that most people I know are using other means of downloading besides Gnutella network; but still a majority do that are not computer literate. I have taught several peers how to use torrents and most now not use it.

I don't know anyone that does not do any illegal downloading; but this is generally music/videos. I can see the majority of illegal music/video downloading being students as most do not have the funds, or care enough to pay for the music. Most adult music is generally mainstream and thus bought from mainstream MPAA and RIAA suppliers, being HMV, Walmart, etc.. A large percentage of students music will be the TOP billboard hits but general interest in non-mainstream music is generally more prevalent in comparison to adult; thus being where a majority of music downloading and sharing comes into effect.

From my understanding and evaluation of peers, is that most know the dangers of illegal downloading and know that some sort of precaution is needed. As the majority of suits against illegal downloading are against users of Limewire, Ares or other various p2p applications; most see torrents as a safer practice. So to observe this decline is normal, as most adults I know that download music illegally don't even know what torrents are and have been slower in approaching p2p; and I generally find that the adult generation like to keep what feels more comfortable to them instead of trying the "newest" thing.

The only real way to combat this generation of downloading is to partner with the ISP's because only they can really throttle the connections and stop this. Too many services allow options such as RC4 encryption making it almost virtually impossible for the RIAA and MPAA to attack; and its almost hopeless to attack a handful of millions. Fortunately for the RIAA and MPAA this is almost becoming a reality as this YouTube generation is pushing the envelope.. I use to have bandwidth of ~3.4 mbps, but a general bandwidth of 1 mbps is now more common.

Who cares if Facebook makes several databases of people's shopping habits, favorite movies, favorite bands, etc.. it is not like they are going to look at you, as an individual user and publish your information, they use all the information as a whole, statistically, to obtain information about trends, people's wants and demands. This only welcomes opportunities for major franchises to produce better products that meet the demand of the public!

There is really no other way to get such statistics in such a vast honest way (honest as in the user is telling the truth). Yes, Facebook is going to make millions selling this information, but they do provide the service, that YOU decide to join. I do not agree with any illegal activity Facebook is involved with, and at this point they have made privacy such a big concern and then apply an addition like Beacon, it goes against what they have been all about.

I personally recommend creating a partition for your OS to run on, and then have a second partition to store all your media, etc.. that way its just an easy reinstall every time you need one.

Lastly, it is like you said.. creating a repair on the website that would require a user to download the fix onto usb/firewire then plug it in into your computer which would then boot up and create the fix would require way too much work for an old OS (when a much newer working one is present).. and most user's would not be able to do such a thing..

It may be for the good of the swarm however there is still several behaviors to observe.. such as when we observe ants, generally each ant is involved with a specific "job", and they are required to do for the good of the hive. They drop pheromones along the path they choose and eventually the paths that contain the most amount of pheromones become the most desirable and taken, eventually finding the most optimal path (this happens because pheromones disappear after time, so the longer path gradually becomes less favorable as the shorter).

We can observe this same behavior with bees and finding pollen. We can observe how they communicate individually and as a whole, how they find the most optimal paths to pollen, and how they know how to get back directly and efficiently.

There does not necessarily have to include rogue nodes to gain benefit from studying this phenomenon. But even then, what if you were to create several smaller hives, and a single large hive to control them all, and one smaller hive gets "killed", it would be interesting to see how the "bees" would respond in finding the other hives, or rebuilding process; and if they would bring new information to the others. Think of comparing this with to a cell phone company with several hot spots.
