  1. Re:Post production? Dragonheart, crap? on Dungeons & Dragons Movie · · Score: 1

Well, I think the CG for godzilla was much more elaborate and expensive and took longer to produce, and I don't see anyone defending that :) I was actually very pleased by the CG in the movie, but I'm a little disgruntled because I skipped school, waited in a long line, and paid way too much money to see that piece of crap in a huge theatre full of annoying people.

  2. Post production? on Dungeons & Dragons Movie · · Score: 3

News of this has been around for a while. And even back then, the status of it was "everything has been filmed, we're now in post production". I guess that's necessary for some of the things they talk about, like 70+ red and gold dragons. But I remeber how ridiculously lame dragonheart and godzilla were. It's like half the movie was pure CG and it was absolute crap! But the pictures they have of the live action shots look really good! And the fact that the producer was so into making this movie for himself and for the loyal d&d fans out there instead of designing a movie for a focus group. I'm impressed with everything I've read about this movie so far, though.

  3. The only thing keeping me back from linux games on Jagged Alliance 2 for Linux · · Score: 2

is usb mouse support. Every windoze game I play requires 3d (which I'm very impressed with for linux currently) and extremely high rates for my mouse. I can honestly tell the difference between ps/2 and usb performance under windows (even with ps2rate) and I've had really bad ps/2 problems. I haven't checked out the usb support in the 2.3 kernels, but from what I've heard, it uses ps/2 emulation for mice so that things like XF86 will be happy with it. I would think that would give me the performance problems I'm getting with real ps/2 devices, and I haven't been able to find any resources for setting the ps/2 mouse refresh rate under linux (apart from XF86's configuration, which didn't really work for me).

  4. Is it legal to reverse the offer? on MSN $400 Rebate in CA and OR Stopped · · Score: 1

I am, as of this very moment, kicking myself for not running out and taking advantage of this sooner. I held off because they said the offer was valid until march 31. Can they do that? They specifially advertised to me that I could do this, and now they won't. Like someone commented on the first story about how he got a better computer becasue the ad didn't mention limited quantites and they were out of stock on the advertised one.

As for the moral issue, I figure microsoft owes me for all the time I wasted fixing stupid windows problems, deleting 4 of my 5 com1's, etc. When I worked tech support, I would curse these problems and dream about how I could solve most of them with either modprobe of ifconfig. I want BLOOD! err... um, I mean MONEY!

  5. 2600's page on Xdaliclock Fails Y2k (But Everything Else Seems Fine) · · Score: 1

Hmm, the page says Internal Server Error, and returns a response code of 200, which means OK. Observe:

    Server: Apache/1.3.6 (Unix)

I've been unimpressed with 2600's attention to detail. They are mostly a political organization, and not a script kiddie training squad like everyone thinks they are. I still buy the mag and show up to the pdx meets though, and I appreciate what they do.

  6. agucultural? on Hazards of Genetic Engineering · · Score: 2

I'm aware that it's a horrible spelling of agricultural, but I had to read that over a couple times to be sure it wasn't something else. Is it really too hard to proof read stories before they are posted? Or it could even be run through ispell in the admin utilities. I'm surprised at how unprofessional /. remains despite the gobs of money pumped into the andover staff.

-- my completely offtopic $.02 because I've been working on just such a thing all day.

As for a relevant point, I'm also disappointed with the quality of genetically engineered food. (me too :)

  7. How does it work? on Open-Source Language Translator Opens For Beta · · Score: 2

I've studied compiler design, and I've wondered about how human languages compare to programming languages. I would think the biggest hurdle is interpreting ambiguous phrases like, 'fruit flies like a banana'. And all the implied words seem like typecasting, but are also ambigous. '(you/I/they) Come here, dammit'. But I wonder if the entire thing is more than just a really complex language description (in BNF or something) with a big database and a few enumerated phrases.

  8. They got away with it in Bowfinger on Anti-Scientology Site Shut Down · · Score: 2

THey should just rename any references from Scientology to mindhead :) I'm still amazed at how much of a slap in the face that movie was to scientologists.
