My bad for my last comment, a little research shows the 360 uses the HDD as a cache if it's there.
And I agree, even if Sony were to take away BC eventually, they should do it years down the line when PS2 becomes completely obsolete (which I doubt it will happen within the lifetime of the PS3) and they'd be better off losing massive amounts money now than pulling this.
This isn't as bad as removing the hard drive. All XBox 360 games have to assume you might not have a HD because of that Core model, so they can't use it to preload data.
