  3. Already boycotting Amazon.... on Amazon Culls "Offensive" Books From Search System · · Score: 1

Well, I am already boycotting Amazon because they continue to sell dog fighting videos and magazines that promote the illegal, cruel sport. So what's one more boycott? It is not ok to sell that kind of stuff up front or out of their "back room" as much as it is not OK to sell snuff films. So I guess I agree that it is OK to boycott a company if you don't agree with their practices. (Not that I think that they give one rat's ass)

I just want to say here that not everyone who is pro technology and concerned about stuff for nerds is anti Greenpeace. I think it is essential to push big companies hard to improve their ways since the governments that we elect (or don't) seem to be powerless against their lobbies. I am always amazed when I meet people with libertarian leanings, who really want to get rid of governmental controls all together, but then are willing to let corporations (who are not accountable to anyone except for their profit minded share-holders) have a free ride. I would be happy to see less government if there was some other way to keep the corporations from making serious decisions that effect my health, my children's future and life as we know it. And, well, the governments we have now are barely effective as it is, so we need groups like greenpeace to keep pressure on them. No matter how much I love my linux box or my x-box, it does not trump the responsibility being aware of the damage they may be causing.IMHO.

  5. Re:Better games? on D&D 4th Ed vs. Open Gaming · · Score: 1

The best games I have played have been games that the various groups I have been with have created them selves. aside from that I enjoy the d6 version of Starwars and really wish that had an OGL to work it into a more fantasy genre. quite honestly, when I have a craving to play D&D, I get out my old 1st ed. books, clunky as they are, and just work around their problems. I guess I am cheap, but I never wanted to get caught up in the "now you must buy into the new improved system until we improve it again and then you will shell out for that too..." mentality. I figure it was a lemon from the start, but the only game we had at the time. there are much better options now.

I want to add one thought to this discussion. I know that it is possible through the use of drugs or other stimuli to have a short experience of something beyond normal human experience, but having that type of experience is not why I practice my faith. I practice Buddhist Meditation in order to have more patience, more focus, more tolerance and kindness to others, and stronger introspection. It works. The results benefit me every day in more ways than I can count. To my knowledge, no drug or quick fix can achieve what hours of quiet training can do. IMO a "religious experience" is something that just sort of happens as a byproduct of doing real spiritual work. Having the experience without the work is pointless. It proves nothing and rarely leads people to improve themselves.
