Convention/Optimization are both important, they make life easier for everyone using your code.
However, it may not be practical for you to do it. If somebody else wants to, that's wonderful. But in many cases, you will have to decide if your revisions will be worth making.
For hardware vendors to "care about Linux", means to me, they should open source their drivers/utilities.
Anything short of that seems fairly inconsistent.
Due to the overwhelming amount of downloads, it's encouraged that you download using bittorrent. That is... unless you use Comcast! =)
