  1. Re:Absolutely Not on Should Addictive Tech Come With a Health Warning? · · Score: 1

Rather, there should be a warning on voting machines: "Danger, lawyers encourage stupid lawsuits. And lawmakers encourage stupid warnings. Make sure any lawmaker you vote for is NOT a lawyer...or stupid."

  2. Re:1 in 2000 people on The 1000 Genomes Project · · Score: 1

    Way to go, Indy!

But two things in the original post triggered a bell:
"...over 100 regions of DNA are known to be related to illnesses, but the maps that exist are vague and are drawn from an extremely small population pool. According to the article, this results in the need for slow, expensive, and laborious studies to pinpoint causes..."

    1. "Related to illness" doesn't mean causes illness. If successful, the temptation will be to say, "Oh, you've got a predisposition" to the illness, and stop there, instead of seeking further info, like, "Do you drink more than 10 cups of coffee a day, and do you exercise regularly?" While the potential is good for help in screening, the potential to "save money" by simply looking at a gene may prove too tempting in a for-profit health care industry, resulting in potentially less advice, other than to change their DNA, to those predisposed to the illness.
    2. The quote implies that gene sequencing 2,000 people, and then viewing the DNA of patients will be faster and less expensive. I'm not entirely sure that will be the case. (And, if, "change your DNA" is the only suggestion, I suspect changing one's DNA might be a tad more expensive too!)

  3. Re:Marketing Slogan on Windows 7 To Be Released Next Year? · · Score: 1

You left out "Windows for Pen 1.0," out around the time of WFWG, and years later, "WindowsCE" the "first" Windows for pen computing.(sic) And, of course, "Ford Sync. Powered by Microsoft Auto..." Interestingly, both Ford and Microsoft are known for quality of construction.

But back to the original article, Windows8, aka, "VistaUltimateSuperNew," due in late 2009 now, will be delayed to 2012, and, after extensive testing, will just happen to be incompatible with every other operating system and program in the world, and will require new hardware to run. KickOff ceremonies for the "new technology" will be held in Iraq, with BIG fireworks. Iraqis will give it a BIG welcome, particularly as it will not allow the playing of any pr0n.. SP1 will fix the problem of not being able to play any of your old music or video from the Vista days, but will not allow reading or writing OOXML files, "for security reasons." Linux users will point out the new Damn Small Linux runs 1,000,000,000,000 times faster on the same hardware, without the lengthy delays while typing in simple sentences.

  4. Re:Linux has staying power on Is Apple Killing Linux on the Desktop? · · Score: 1

"...Linux is analogous to the internet. It keeps getting bigger and better, and it has no weak link..." But some might call spam, ddos, net "non-neutrality", government censorship, and internet worms, "weak links." While I'm a big Linux fan, I can think of at least one weak link. Yet I am consistently impressed at the quality and quantity of people who rush to its defense.

"which is also the least restrictive DRM you'll find."

Good points, but somehow, the words, "Yes, massa, you a good boss, massa" come to mind?

The least restrictive DRM is no restrictions, no DRM...something we used to have until recently. I can still recall the day I was driving to Boston's airport, listening to the radio, and started swearing. (My wife wondered what the hell was wrong with me, so I had to explain.) The guy on the radio was explaining how good DRM was going to be for consumers, and made it sound OK if you didn't understand the implications. I figured there was no chance congress would vote against it, and consumers, including me, would be hurt. Now we have these discussions about DRM, and whether or not you should be sued for ripping your CD to your computer, even if you don't share it!

Remove the DRM from all schemes! Heck, make it illegal, and sue those who make and use it!!!

That's precisely what I thought. Then I thought, geez, these things will encourage copycat crimes, by people who want to become famous and don't care about anything else. Then I thought, maybe terrorists would try to top one another to make the billboards. Then I thought, "Why should politicians be the only ones who get nationwide publicity by talking about terrorism?"

Yup. Transfer boatloads of IT jobs to India, Ireland, China, and elsewhere, and you then have an abundance of engineers in the U.S. What a surprise! Only an engineer could have figured it out.
