I had the same problem until I had to take a class for my education degree in teaching basic arithmetic.
In one semester, I discovered that I had missed a lot of learning of the basics. (I don't blame anyone; I just didn't get it the first time through.) After learning this, my learning accelerated at a furious rate, such that in graduate school I had a perfect score in two semesters of statistics.
