  1. Another PC demise prediction on Final Fantasy XI PC Requirements Announced · · Score: 2

People have been predicting the demise of the PC as a gaming platform since goodness knows when but it is still with us.

There could be many reasons for this. Perhaps it is because within a year high end PCs are always able to outperform the most recent consoles. Perhaps it's because certain styles of game (e.g. Civilisation or the best selling (PC) game of all time the Sims) just works better with a default PC setup. Perhaps it's because PCs have a bigger installation base.

Don't get me wrong, for the most part I prefer console games (actually the only console I own is a GBA and very good it is too) but it's too easy to fall into the trap and write off PC games. Most of the popular online games are still PC based and the fact that Square has chosen to release FFIX for the PC (rather than the Xbox) shows that it still considers to be a viable platform. Also note that the requirements state that it needs Windows (not Linux). Just because Linux runs on the PS2 doesn't make it any more viable as a gaming platform.

Blimey that certainly does sound like it was a whole lot of hastle. However, I would argue that if you are willing to compile from source you should expect to be in for a rough time. Because there are so many parts to it (this library that library this compiler etc), it's just more likely to go wrong...

If you want the easy life then wait until your distro brings out a packaged version of the DVD players. I myself fought with hand compilation until I found that Mandrake packaged Xine themselves and I just installed the RPMs. I can't stand the interface but things did work. The Debian guy downstairs also seemed to have things go quite smoothly with Ogle...

I guess the moral is that if your distro is old then getting new things to work with it is going to be difficult. That's the time to sit back and wait for the next update to be released with what you need packaged in it, unless you want to upgrade half your installation by hand. If that's what you want to do - good luck. You might need it.

One things that I noticed when I was looking about for a place to study was that departments were keen to point out the sheer number of computers they had. If you are not planning on doing all your work on your home machine (and why should you?) it far more helpful to know the number of useful computers. Talk to the students in the room. Ok one of them might have an axe to grind or they may have all been specially selected but if the room is busy this is less likely. Whatever you do don't just stand there like a lemon when you can talk to real students - after all that's going to be you in a year. Many students are willing to talk but won't volunteer information. It leaves an impression of you too (someone willing to ask irritating questions or someone who genuinely interested in the department)...

Some of the things that make a computer unuseful:
    1. It's broken. This happens an awful lot and can happen in non obvious ways. Ranges from it doesn't power on to it doesn't see the printer.
    2. The network is too slow. This one is a killer at busy times of the year and doesn't just apply to logging in. If your uni/college's connection is unreliable and you are trying to fetch something from home it doesn't matter that it's fast...
    3. The computer doesn't have the software you need on it. It's all very well having a library of hundreds of computers but if the software you need is only in the Compsci lab your options are limited.

While they could get away with this for the physically smaller toys and insignificant characters (like the micromasters) I think they lost credibility with PowerMaster Prime (I think that was the one). However, I'm glad that I they release the closed source binary drivers because they are much faster than anything else out there. Would that be the case if they gave people the specs? I don't know (I can't hack that code but others might).

However, in saying you don't care that the drivers are closed you are taking a very shortsighted view of things. What about BSD (will Nvidia support or won't they)? What about if Nvidia decide to stop supporting linux in the future because they don't consider it viable (and then XFree86 5 comes out)?

Also anyone who has been using them and has a problem will never have a kernel bug report looked at seriously (I know :) and I've tried sending mail about bugs shown by gears in earlier drivers (long before the nopentium business) and I've never heard anything back...

Quick plea - if you have filed an unconditional bug that hasn't seen activity for a month or two check whether it is still valid. If not resolve it worksforme. Thanks.

With all this increased testing, more and more bugs are being filed at increasingly speedier rate and the Bugzilla database could always do with an extra hand to stop bug counts spiralling out of control.

    Plug
Over in #kill-unco on irc.mozilla.org we are trying and reduce the number of unconfirmed bugs. The more help we get, the sooner people's complaints are serviced and the sooner they can be fixed.

Sometimes unconditionals slip through intial net of bugzilla marshalls and just wind up being forgotten about. This can happen because the intial marshalls don't have access to the same platform or don't use a particular component much (macs, mail and news/java spring to mind). Other times the reporter doesn't file enough information and needs to be prompted for more. Often unconditionals are filed subsequently fixed by other bugs but not closed by their original reporters. All these things make for a messy database and engineers could use up
time marking dups rather than fixing bugs.

A few moments of your time could save engineers from going mad seeing the same bug reported by reported in 30 different places. If each slashdot reader helped resolve just two mozilla bugs a day then we could all get a better browser...
