Upon returning to work the following week, the principal (who had known about the test) asked the subordinate, "So, how did you do?"

The teacher, slightly smug and obviously not concerned at all, responds, "Oh I did alright. Not great though, it was a tough test! I managed to get a 70% though, so I passed."

Of course, who hasn't seen this? Honestly, I think this is pretty much the main differentiation between a developer living in the same city as the client and a developer living on another continent.

The developer on the other continent delivers items that will literally meet the formal requirements; however, they often lack the cultural aptitude to question those formal requirements because they make terrible sense.

The developer living a couple miles away is more likely to maintain the necessary cultural aptitude to acknowledge when a customer's requirement is incredibly ill-conceived.

It could be as simple as recognizing an innocuous typo. What if the PM for a new Los Angeles Dodgers web site had sent the style guide to a developer overseas and there was a typo in the hex code for the color of a header? The overseas developer probably wouldn't pick up on the fact that the color they asked for was similar to the orange used by the rival Giants, while someone more familiar with the culture might notice right away that the Dodgers should not be using orange for their header color.

So... yeah... hire local developers! Rah rah rah!

I worked briefly on a site launch for a startup a couple of years ago (selling overpriced designer shit to Austrailians, basically) and the founder was absolutely insistent that people had to sign up before they were even allowed to look at any products.

His main argument in favor of that tactic was that it gives the user a sense exclusiveness... they are now part of the "club"... one of the cool kids... with accounts not automatically approved (they would have to wait an artificial amount of time) the delay helped build anticipation for looking at stuff and then being able to purchase it.

I was strongly opposed to the founder's idea, but he insisted, and I left shortly thereafter (not really because of this, however, was offered a better position elsewhere).

Last I heard, they completely changed their business model, so I am guessing their choices had failed.

Honestly, I wouldn't want my farm underneath huge power lines, but I have family who do have a plant nursery just a couple hundred yards (if that) from some high voltage lines. And in fact, looking at the sat photos, the neighbor's ranch next door is directly underneath... and he was a dairy farmer (who lived into his 100s).

Your local Home Depot (or equivalent) has a good selection of seeds

Do yourself a favor and never buy plants from Home Depot. They are grown by cut-rate farmers who (depending on the variety of tree) sometimes simply collect these plants from the wild. These trees are destined to fail. Of course, not all of their stock is this way, but the stuff that isn't is still poorly cared for by people who know little about plants.

I get that you're only talking about a pack of seeds, but the premise stands. Besides, buying from a local garden center is so much more of an enjoyable experience.

I doubt it was the direct heat itself. I am not terribly familiar with garden cress specifically, but I would assume it likes things warm and damp for germination. Assuming the dampness was adequate, I can't imagine the heat would be significant enough to prevent germination.

I would look closer at what is happening to the localized humidity near the router. The heat may instead be drying things outs, and if the router has any kind of active cooling, that may exacerbate things.

My American grandmother (who is by no means overweight or anything) has had several serious procedures in just the last couple of years. There is something to be said about the culture here.

The US also has several times the population spread out over a much greater area. This means more doctors serving small isolated communities. That's going to cost more.

Also, and I could be entirely wrong on this, but the US is a very litigious culture. Medical expenses will continue to rise as people file malpractice suits. What other countries face similar problems?
