  1. Protect yourself on Milky Way Black Hole Could Reignite · · Score: 5, Funny

Remember kids, just like government mind control rays the gamma ray bursts generated by our galaxy's black hole center can be blocked by a tin foil hat.

You may want a tin foil codpiece, too.

  2. Prevent those mistakes on Identify and Verify Users Based on How They Type · · Score: 1

If you set it to verify loosely enough that it'll ignore subtle variations it could work, but think of the applications to preventing embarrassment... no more drunk IMs or emails that you really shouldn't send since it won't even let you log in.

  3. In a young company, maybe on Should IT Shops Let Users Manage Their Own PCs? · · Score: 1

When your company is full of young, tech savvy, computer literate people then maybe. But the vast majority of the places I have worked have been half (if not more) full of old semi-luddite completely computer illiterate people who, if left to pick their own computers, would be as likely to come back requesting a PDA as an actual computer. As for running their own maintenance... once again, only with a younger company. Unless the "older segment" of the company is very tech savvy, i.e. engineers/scientists and have all been using computer their entire professional lives, then this sounds like an absolutely terrible idea.

I see what you did there...

  5. Re:The news media is a major part of the problem on New Science Standards Approved in Florida · · Score: 1

Newspapers are, according to journalism professionals, meant to be written for a 7th grade reading level. I can't imagine that TV news can expect a much better audience.

    Except the daily show, maybe.

  6. Good old days... on Has Ron Paul Quit? · · Score: 1

I miss the good old days, back when Ron Paul was still just called Snakes on a Plane.

  7. Re:GATTACA on Similar DNA Molecules Able to Recognize Each Other · · Score: 2, Insightful
If I remember the movie correctly there were anti-discrimination laws, which were technically followed, but when you can extract the genetic information you need from a lost hair or even the epithelial cells contained in a urine sample (for drug testing, of course) you can fairly simply come up with another excuse for not hiring the person and it can never be proved that you did not, in fact, hire them because you knew they'd be dead by 40 of heart disease.

Which was all pretty clearly spelled out in the movie, I think.

  8. Re:You are free to say anything you want on NJ Blogger Fights for Anonymous Free Speech · · Score: 5, Insightful

Ok, but before you get to dig through all of my personal information and destroy my anonymity you have to prove libel occurred.

Were the things I said injurious to the character and reputation of a person/organization? Were the things I said untrue?

If the answer to either of those is no you can take your accountability and go straight to hell.

  9. Re:Labels or Folders? on Free IMAP On Gmail · · Score: 2, Interesting

Except that it does kind of matter, at least to me. I'm connecting to my Gmail account using my palm and Agendus mail and it wants to pull 4000-some emails (400mb worth, I don't want 400mb worth of old emails on my palm thanks). I've tried labeling everything that comes in now as "New" and telling it to pull only things from the "New" folder but it doesn't quite work like that because its a label, not a folder.

Doing it over POP was annoying, but still useful when I was away from useful computers for long periods but still needed to be in touch, IMAP should have solved all the POP issues I'm sure everyone has run into... except now, to do it, I either have to pull 4k emails or delete all of my old archives.

So yeah, folders are (sometimes) important to end users. Thanks.

If, by some rare chance, someone figures out how to make labels work exactly as folders do (at least in the eyes of portable mail clients) I might just kiss you... assuming you share the method with me.
