  4. Strange ranking behavior? on Google (Patent Pending) · · Score: 1
Google offers an advanced patent-pending technology called PageRank(TM) to deliver the most relevant results.

I don't know how this technology works. But it surely has some funny "relevant results". Take a look at this one: http://www.google.com/search?q=bugs+picture.

It's a fact: they should be first... Google rulezz!

I fact you could have your own personal vertifcates for free! I believe there is the need for a non-profit CA on the Internet. Something like the PGP key database at MIT, but using X.509 certificates.

Did it exist: yes, THAWTE! Does it still exist: with Verisign acting as the key God? I wouldn't be suprosed if I'd get a bill next week.

I'm sorry to say, but Sun is using the Java support to grow into an arrogant monopolist.

Where will it end? All major players in this business have proven not to be trustworthy regarding their software's big mouth.

Or we have to plug a sniffer in every IP-stack we use, or we have to move to software (and companies) we can trust.

I believe choosing for open-source software gives you (and the providing company) a trust relationship. You trust the software because you can check it, because you get the actual code.

Do you want big brother to watch you? Do you want the tiny little bros. watching your every step? I don't think so...

  10. Re:Salary, all the way.... on High Tech Wages - Salary or Hourly? · · Score: 2
I cannot be anything else than salary. High Tech often involves a great deal of research, unproductive time for the company. But you actually need to do this research, otherwise production is useless.

Take a software engineer: How many lines of "good" code can he write in a day? If you calculate it over one month period, you will definitely see high days and low days.

What can I say - it's the way the beast walks.
The only thing you need - for yourself and your company - are well set deadlines! It doesn't matter how long a job takes, as longat the outcome is great.

  11. Respect vs. Selling | Open Source vs. Microsoft on Motley Fool on Microsoft vs. Linux · · Score: 2
I the article about Microsoft vs. Linux, there is a fine paragraph about Open Source vs. Big $$ Applications.

As a developer I must say that getting good feedback from users and getting resect from users is far more important than earning (a lot) of money with the software.
So Open Source software benefits the author probably more than traditionally selling the product. (It always nice if you can get a living outof it, but that's never been the main issue I believe.)

Wouldn't you be doing the same stuff if you were not paid for it? (developers view)

Once upon a time... here were some Linux distributions. In that age Linux belonged to experts and gurus. People which didn't know how to compile a kernel weren't using the Linux OS. However people were interessed using this OS! We can only thank RedHat for bringing Linux to the masses. Only like this we can get even more people involved in creating the best OS ever. We, the people who run Linux since 94-96, will need to take this OS to another level. The only mistake we must never make is trying to make it look and feel too much like M$ "standards" because some dummies like it better that way. From-the-no-rpm-available-age Tim

The EU is not against the PIII. In fact it's a great machine. The only problem existing is Europe is the possible US gov interference in this serial number stuff.

BTW: Wasn't the internet about crossing boundaries? Exploring your world in peace and privacy? Don't we prefer Linux above Windows for freedom issues (and because it's the better OS).

    Think about it...
It's not the EU against the US! It's the people against the gov's interfering.
