Changes are never just lost, when an error does happen and the action cannot be completed then it is rejected and the user notified of this so they can try what they were doing again. You have vastly overstated the severity of such issues.

When advertisments on Wikipedia were first suggested (to help take the pressure off the funds crisis they were seen as in at the time) voluntary enrollment was suggested. It never got enough support, however. It was a reasonable idea since it is, in some respects, insulting to ask for donations when you could be tapping in to such a large revenue source (even with voluntary enrollment the money generated would be huge).

The Nintendo Wii already has a USB port, two in fact. They are on the back, near the top. Not sure if it is possible to attach a USB external hard drive or flash drive - but with sufficient support it is not unlikely that Nintendo will implement such a feature (like the overwhelming push to add USB keyboard support).

It should also be noted that the Wii already has the capability to upgrade physical memory, via the SD card ports on the front. These are not too expensive, though admittedly more pricey than hard disk drives or even flash drives.
