``The Net is another world, potentially a dangerous place. You can harm people and you can get harmed, just like on the road,'' he said. ``If you go through an education process before getting an account then you're better prepared to go out there.''

As a support tech, I'm all about the education process. Another post was a joke about insuring against colliding packets, but seriously... that's not a bad idea. With all the new users coming into the net these days who have never heard of things like Winzip (for their huge pictures and sound files that they just have to send to their aunt and their grandma and everyone else they can think of that has an email address) or Spam... there *is* a sort of bandwidth crisis, And it's only going to get worse...

If folks were required to take a training class in basic Internet (covering "netiquette", spam, file compression, and a dozen other useful tidbits that most of us take for granted) The net would be a far better "place."

I am, however, against the invasion of privacy that licensing represents. Then again, privacy is a bit of an illusion these days... (just watched Enemy of the State again last night) ...so what are we really losing by license? Just how free do you think you are, people?

Usually, I'm one to let others relax in the safety of their own illusions, but this time I'm gonna let one slide.

I used to work for a software company that does CAD for 911 systems (several clients here in the U.S., your town might even be one of 'em) Anyhoo, the point is : the y2k preperation efforts were way behind last time I checked (which was last July, I confess)

Your faith that the companies will take care of everything is kinda quaint, like trusting the government to watch out for your own personal best interests

Consider that the last 3 versions of AIX were supposedly y2k compliant... they were doing "that old one isn't ready for y2k, but this one is" and they did it a few times... then consider that 911 depends on the functionality of AIX on several cities (some of these are major metropolitan areas)

it's gonna be an interesting evening for sure... I don't expect it to be as bad as some suggest, but it's not gonna be smooth either.

I'll be doing tech support at an ISP... I wanna watch the sparks fly from the front row :o)

I'm sure this ain't the time or the place, but... You can try checking your ethernet card, make sure it's all plugged in and the cat didn't knock it out. There's always a logical explanation for these things... and that explanation isn't always "M$ sux"... but sometimes it is... hell, sometimes the explanation is as nebulous as "my machine doesn't feel like doing that right now" ...I've seen that be the cause plenty of times
