I have not used one of the new GeForce cards however I have used both a TNT2(current) and Voodoo Banshee(previous) in my system and 3D performance for games was definately superior with the Banshee. So the Nvidia cards may be capable of much more but what is the point when the Linux performance anyway is very much lacking. It is nice now to have Nvidia drivers that have some acceleration but compare them to the qualuty of 3Dfx Linux drivers and you soon see they have a long way to go.
I agree completely. A panel of judges although more expensive would be a much more preferable solution in my eyes. Then where do we find all the extra judges? Can we get that many qualified people? Is there no end to the problems this raises?

Should the jury know the facts? I think there can be a case made for it. Should we have a jury of peers at all? A case can be made of that too. However, the current Australian law states that we do have a jury of twelve peers and that they must be impartial. It may no be a perfect system but it is the one that we have. I wish I had the answer but I don't. I think the law is something that must evolve with precedent over time. I think this is one precedent that will help it evolve.

Good point but with this new database you would have to sequester every jury for every case. It is not so much this individual case that matters but more the precedent that it sets. Although I think it is good because it puts presure on CrimeNet it has the potential to make the whole legal system unworkable. A higher court will have to make a reasonable ruling on this otherwise the courts will be in chaos.

I think people are missing the point. CrimNet combines all this information in one place and makes it easily accesible. For a couple of dollars and two minutes of your time you can have all the criminal information evercompiled on someone. To do this yourself manually at least with Australian records could take months of research. The laws in Australia do not allow information from previous offences to be used in a trial. It only takes one rogue juror to get this info and spread it around to turn a case. This is more importabt than this single issue though. I don't think databases like this should be allowed to opreate. People should not have such easy access to this information. We should have control of our personal information. What if I apply for a job and someone with the same name as me has been convicted of theft. My potential boss checks out crime net, no job for me. I think I have it out of my system now.

I don't know if it made it's way to the networks in the states and elsewhere yet but there is some fantastic footage of it in action. Was shown on various Australian TV networks last night. Think I also saw it on the local sky and fox news services so you may want to check them out. Then again Cnn is probably beeming it around the globe by now. If not try some of the Australian news services web sites, have not checked them out yet but they may be worth a try. Probably wwwabc.net.au would be your best bet. I hope this is useful to someone.

Anyone find anything about this stuff actually being produced and used? I could very well be wrong here but it sounds like classic vapourware. I think the old saying could stand; when something sounds to good to be true it normally is. However, if this stuff is being produced and does work as advertised it could be a great leap for gadgets. I would like to have this stuff in my mp3 walkman and pc if it works as advertised. Hardly revolutionary though

We are considering different things here. You are talking about private companies being involved in space research / exploration which I also agree is a good thing. What I was talking about is the use of space exploration as a marketing tool. This I think is bad. do you want man landing on Mars and spiking a Red Flag with Golden Arches on it into the soil? I don't.

It seems the US space programme is striving for new lows. This is the sort of thing that people frm elsewhere read and think only in America! I know the program may need the money and it may be for the gretaer benefit but this time I just can't get over the tackiness of the whole thing. I hope this doesn't happen. Maybe I am getting carried away here but this is just wrong. We can't let Disney in on everything, can we?

If you don't like it then don't use it. This is not being forced on any one. So what if it's one guy. So what if it never takes off. He wanted to do it and he from all indications he has. I say applaud the guy. People probably critisized a guy name Linus just like this when he was working on this natty little alternative OS years ago. You know the one, what is it called; Linux thats it.

So win has better 3D performance. My P3 TNT2 RedHat 6.2 system runs Quake3 great at 1024*768. Good enough for me. My system is not suseptible to every virus that comes along. I can configure my system however I want. I can play with the source code and make my system do things the way I want. So what if my 3d performance is down a bit on a win system. There is so many other advantages. If you have a system only for games then you should go buy a DreamCast or PSX2. Think about all the other advantages Linux offers before you flame. I hear this one trotted out every time I go to a LAN party then everyone wants me to setup as the file server because it's much better than their machines.

OK the money may not be breaking the RedHat budget. They may be doing it for the publicity and to get the support of the community. The point is they are helping. More important than their money is their name. The fact that RedHat are putting their name behind it is a very important point. I bet the people they are supporting are not complaining about them doing it for the press. Congrats RedHat.

I thnik the most important thing is when you get the chance to talk to people talk to them in terms of outcomes and solutions. Don't tell them that Apache on RH 6.1 can serve 100 page views per second (*completely made up example*). Tell them that they can vastly improve their service to their customers by being faster and more available. If they are an induividual don't tell them they will have greater uptime. Tell them that Linux / BSD doesn't crash as often thus they will get more done.
Many techos, myself included make the mistake of talking tech details and all people want to hear is what it can do for them. I think this is one of the most important things we can do.

Now now children quiet down. It is about whatever you want to use it for. If you use Linux for freedom and liberty that is just fine. To answer your question I use Linux as in most cases it suits my needs better than other OSs. Overall it is the best OS for me. You obviously missed the point of my post which was that having something is better than nothing. I agree OpenSource would be preferable but after the waiting I have done I am happy with any driver that can offer me some 3D performance with my Nvidia card. Just grow up. You are entitled to your opinion and so am I. Respect the opinion of others and they may respect yours.

I think at the moment most of us won't care about restrictive liscencing and a lack of source. I just want to play Quake 3 and I think there are plenty out there like me. For now lets be thankful we have some thing. Enjoy it and shut up just for a litle while. It would be nice to havce it all fully Open Source. However, Nvidia has chosen not to release OpenSource drivers so what are you going to do? Go and have a game of Quake 3 or whatever you happen to use your 3D card for.

I am no expert on writing drivers. However, I think one should apply the principle that "If something sounds too good to be true, it normally is". Unfortunately things just are not that easy.

Great news for SuSE but really means nothing as evryones criteria is different. We all have our own ways we want to use our system so different distributions will suit us, or you can always roll your own. Anyway congrats to SuSE, should be good for their marketing.

So many people say everybody should move to Linux, BSD etc. Many people want to and some give it a go. They hear about the great support you can get in newsgroups and around the net. They give it a try. What happens next?....
Many of these people run into minor problem or are just not confident. They head out on to the net seaking help. They start posting in NGs and other forums. Then if anybody replies it is mostly derision for being a newbie. They want to give it a go but most don't want to help them. They get frustrated and give up. I have seen this happen on numerous occasions.
RESULT
RedHat etc produce things like rpm, graphical auto install routines etc. The user no longer has to know anything to get their system usable. Some would argue this is a good thing. However, for someone who wants experiment and play with their system this is no good. They have everything up and running but don't know a thing about it, thus can't use it to it's potential. I have seen this too often and it is a terrible shame. These are the next people we need to get involved as they will convert the rest.
Do we really want these people using Linux etc? I say yes but I think it turns off some of the real geek types who think they are superior because they use Linux. This is a very sad thing indeed. Personally I make the time whenever possible to help newbies. Im no expert but there is a serious lack of people willing to help.
In conclusion I think the poularity is annoying many people who once thought they were superior.

Coming from Australia we marvel at the amount of litigation that goes on in the US. We have not reached the US level as courts here will always make the unsuccesful party pay the winners costs.
Why do these people just not use it? They have a choice, use a different service provider. I have seen AOL their *exclusive* content and services are not that great.
From the comments I have seen here it would appear these people have just not set their accounts up corectly. It is human nature just to blame somebody else though. Add a highly litigous society such as in the US and this sort of stuff is just begging to happen.
I have no love for AOL but this is just ridiculous. Just people trying to get something for nothing. I hope the courts laugh it out just like it deserves. Not knowing the US legal system I don't know how likely this is. BTW I have nothing against the US or it's citizens. This is just an observation from abroad.

Although it is a good sign that the legislation won't change anything it won't change the legislation. This legislation was introduced sloely to appease one independant senator so the federal government could push though the sale of the state owned telco. I don't think they actually wanted it. This was their pathetic way of getting what they wanted. This legislation is toothless and will remain so. As draconian as it sounds it doesn't mean anything. Very little will change and eventually the press will get sick of writing about it.
Sounds good doesn't it. Well the only thing that worries me is that this legislation which has no sunset clause will lie around forgotten about for years. Then sometime in the future it will be dreged up and used against legitamate causes. A scary proposition. In the near term this will have little affect. We do need to work against it and stop it though otherwise it will turn around a and bite us. Once they have something like this in place where is the next step?

I agree Xmms is great. However, the best product in the world is no good if there is nothing to use it with. Microsoft has proved this to us many times over. Windows streaming media appears to be becoming more popular all the time. As much as I hate to admit it it works quite well too.*I have to use NT and IE4 @ work*
I think what we really need to do is get out there and let content producers know what we want. Every time you go to a web site and they have a format not available to Linux etc let them know what you want.
However, as much as we all like to act holier than though I think many people would start using M$ streaming media if the majority of the content was in that format. What are the chances of them OpenSourcing it? Negligable I would say. So I think it all comes down to the fact that we need to push content producers.

I read an interesting article in Wired a couple of years ago (don't remember which issue). In this article the writer was looking for a medium and format to save the work of a little known poet who had just died. The writer did not want the writers work to die.
After researching many formats and mediums he figured none would really stand the test of time. His solution post it on the net. Reasoning being that others would find it and hopefully enjoy it the way he had. If others took copies hopefully it would be converted to various formats and mediums morphing over time from a html document to xml to... This sounds like the best available theory to me.
May not be exactly the same case but it provides good ideas for a way to approach the problem I think. It gives the best chance of something of value being maintained.

Does this mean at least a temporary end to CmdrTaco being accused of not supporting OpenSource? What a refreshing change. Now, maybe we don't have to sift through the whinging comments every time an OpenSource related article is posted.
