Would this not be a situation like most comercial software? You purchase the right to use the product not the actual product it's self. This is a horrendous situation but unfortunately the way things are. I hope this technology does not get anywhere.

If people keep breaking the encryption then the powers that be will keep trying to find ways to protect their product. If we could just use them on Linux then there would not be attempts on the encryption. Bit like the proverbial chicken and egg I guess.

I agree. Maybe there are some who want 100%. But please rush out something that just works for games. Games are the only thing I am hanging onto an MS product for.

I don't know why I stick with Nvidia. Sure their cards are great *(If run under MS)* but their support of the Linux community has been somewhat lacking. Unless they do something I think I and many like me will be heading back to 3Dfx for a Voodoo 5.

I think most people understand the spirit of GPL and will abide by it regardless of what they can actually do. I guess we can only hope this will happen. If anyone tries to exploit this then I believe they will be boycotted by the majority of people provided those of us who understand what this means inform others. Even though it may sound an onerous task, educating newbies and non technical users is vital in fighting the posibilities this represents.

However as I stated at the begining of this rant I do not believe this will be widely exploited. That said I am far from an expert on this issue.

Maybe they have a legal right to do this, I don't realy know US law. However, if they cover a competitors logo now what is next. It is very much like the censorship debate, which has been very busy here in au lately. We don't want to see child pronography or ultra right wing views, nor do we realy care if CBS covers up NBCs logo. But where from here? Where do we stop the censorship and when is it OK for a TV network to block something in a broadcast? I believe these things walk a very thin line and we have to be careful and take the view of where it could end up, rather than it's direct impact now.

Just think of the things this could lead to. What are we going to let the media get away with? A stance needs to be taken on issues like this otherwise before we know it all our media is fiction and we are living in "1984".

You all seem to think that the United States is the only place anyone can get full strenght ecryption. I hate to tell you this but encryption work is being done all around the world. There are many full strenght products that were not developed in the United States. Even some that were are available elsewhere, ie PGP. The only people this is a major bonus for is US vendors not users around the world or at least not on the same scale.

Another example is Fortify. This puts full strenght encryption back into Netscape browsers. I realise there are other reasons such as being able to share code etc but for the main part the real benefactors are only US vendors. Im fine down here in Australia with the products that are already available to me and Im sure many others around the world are.

Could not have been said better. Without the allowing of patents there are so many things that will come from genetic research that we will miss out on. Would we all not like cures for afflictions such as Parkinsons.

Our governemnts will not fund this research as it is extremely expensive. The companies who do this research deserve to be able to patent their work for this reason. we need to look past the immediate reaction that it is silly and consider what it actually means to us all.

  9. Re:Linux certification on First LPI Certification Exam · · Score: 2
If someone has certification in RedHat they will know a fair bit about Linux granted. However, they will know the RedHat vision of Linux not the true OpenSource platform it is. For example take the RedHat package system. If people learn this they may never know how to compile and run source code (I believe this would be a very bad thing.

If RedHat became the standard that would miss the point completely. Linux is OpenSource non vendor specific and free to be adapted. If the only recognised certification available was RedHat then they suddenly become MS with a monopoly on the Linux market. Certification for Linux must be independant of vendors.

BTW I have nothing against RedHat. I use it myself I just don't believe they are the right people to be in charge of Linux certification.

RedHat is not the standard! Red Hat is the most common and a pretty good distro, but the standard? I think not. The standards are all the pieces that individually make the different distributions not any one distribution. Having an independant body is a good idea. Perhaps one that has the backing on Linus and all the major distributors or maybe something like ISO. Any ideas?

I agree EFF would be good but how many people other than real IT people know who EFF is much less trust them. This can't be done by just anyone. I am thinking someone like the UN should setup a division for it as they are recognised the world over and their name is generally trusted.
