Plugging in at night is just a logical progression, until they realized that the majority of people who live in major cities live in apartment buildings or condo's such as myself.
Where am I supposed to plug in? There are no outlets in the parking lot and I'm guessing I'll have trouble getting the owner of the building to run a line out there just for me, let alone one to each spot and have each one hooked up to a different meter.
Exactly, one only need to go to the wikipedia page on flying cars to see a few previous attempts.
A roadable flying car is highly unlikely to ever happen for one simple reason, winter and road salt, nothing ruins metal faster then that, and the thin metal needed to keep a "car" light enough to fly won't help, maybe if you made the whole thing out of carbon fiber you might have a chance but good luck selling a 100% carbon fiber body aircar at an affordable price.
Until there is a breakthrough in making a cheap, affordable, lightweight, durable and corrosion proof material in mass quantities there will be cars and aircraft, not practical aircars.
Oh and of course there is that whole need for a system capable of keeping track of millions of aircraft and making sure there are no mid air collisions.
In the movie the main character is having an interesting journey through time until he hit a 'bump' at August 26th 2037, where he finds a Moon mining operation has disrupted the lunar orbit. As a result, the Moon is breaking apart and showering Earth with massive chunks of rock. His presence outside of a shelter leads to an attempt by two military personnel to arrest him, but after they draw his attention to the shattered Moon and give him a brief explanation behind its present state, there is a scuffle and he escapes. He makes it into the time machine just as the city is being destroyed, but is knocked out and fails to witness the destruction of human civilization.
But that was just a movie (and a book) of course.

Maybe in another 100 years.
