  1. Re:and then.... on Vista at Risk of Being Bypassed by Businesses · · Score: 1

I'll raise my hand then and be the first to say I made the switch because of Vista. I bought a macbook last year just before Vista to move to OSX. I'm now comfortably using Leopard and am pleased with the UPGRADE in speed that it has afforded me. I have also installed Ubuntu and begun the 'painful' process of learning to work with Wine to make WoW and a few other DX games work with my system, I didn't need to spend more money on hardware in that area though so stop that lie. It's not a terrible process I'm used to Linux in the server area where I've worked for a few years now with administration, so maybe I have a leg up. I even have a full, legal key for Vista Business that was GIVEN to me that I refuse to install, I have no need and no desire to continue the pain of using Windows so I can be forced to pay for a broken upgrade in the future. At work I've moved my desktop to Linux (this time Fedora where I have had a little more luck with work productivity features) after finding some guides to connect to our exchange system. As for your security issue, that's another reason I've LEFT XP behind at work. The 'fix' that MS gave to our lan department was to remove administrator rights to our hosts. The problem is that 90% of software I've tried to install WANTS administrator access. Blame MS. It should require a password for system sensitive changes, however MS took it to an extreme. The security checks in Vista are off the wall. OS X does it right, as do most Linux distros. And it still doesn't matter, people have already just gotten used to clicking 'ok' for everything. The core of the problem is still the person behind the keyboard. Stop your FUD I suppose is the tone of my response.

Not sure why this was modded "funny", but that's merely a formality I suppose. It is a very good uplifting story and glad to read there are some nice people still in the world. Thanks.

  3. Not surprising. on Gene Simmons Blames College Kids For Music Industry Woes · · Score: 1

Gene Simmons and KISS have always been about protecting their image to sell more product. He is right, there is more in the value in KISS army gear than there is in Elvis stuff, only because there is so much of it out there. I remember the resurgence of KISS merchandise in the 90's. They have plastered their name and logo over everything (for the second major times of their careers). They are ONLY about making money and milking the cow for all it's worth. His opinion is therefore IRRELEVANT, he is the old model and the old model refuses to adapt to the new or even acknowledge it.

"Do you realize all those benefits are present in the 360 game? "

Certainly. My comments are in reference to the game as a game itself sucking as the parent indicated, not a comparison between physical and digital game.

And as for conversion to digital, not every board game is deserving of a video game. I know my friends and I loved to play Risk. We tried playing Risk online and in person via PS2, we could never get into it. It just isn't the same game, particularly because it pulls all the nuances of having the pieces out. I feel that many people feel the same people (just as I'm sure many people feel the video game is a boon).

Then you must be terrible at the game. There are so many features that have made it perfect since I started playing the actual version of the game (not the XBox360 version)

    - It's one of few board games I've ever played that scaled well with number of people. The more people the more strategy there is to tile placement while a two-player game is still interesting.
    - It is fast to start. There is no massive setup time. Drop the tiles into a pile, make sure they're all face down, shuffled up and start playing. It starts to get boring to go play a game that takes 30 minutes just to set up the board.
    - It's a fast game. Over anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
    - It's replayable, games will consistently be different.
    - It's fast paced, player turns are done and over pretty quickly (unless you have someone that takes forever to realize the obvious play.
    - There is ample room for "screwage", that is, when playing with some of your regular friends, games eventually deteriorate into being able to screw over the most people when in position not to win or if you just want to make someone else's game a living hell (such as that person winning too often).

I think the real problem is these games don't translate well to people playing video games. The whole point of a board game is the socialization factor which you eliminate almost completely playing online.

Because the keyboard and mouse is a terrible couch gaming experience. Please leave your PC control scheming comments to yourself. The rest of us like to keep our computer games on the computer desk and our console games in the living room.
