That would require a reversal of the entire Apple strategy, as well as a huge developer-blitz to make OS X work on non-Apple hardware.

OS X is good and stable, but it's merits owes a lot to the tight integration with Apple's hardware choices.

The real question is will they force Apple to do the same, or does the Little dictator of Cupertino get another free pass?

What about Ubuntu? Does it have to offer a choice as well?

Well, Ubuntu does, really. As soon as you boot into Ubuntu for the first time, just click Applications->Add/Remove. Uncheck firefox. Check whatever you want to use.

As for Apple, yeah, they do get another free pass.

  4. Web semantics 101 on Saving Journalism With Flash and Java · · Score: 2, Interesting

For most web applications, a developer should think of three layers:

    1. Semantic information (Mostly HTML/XHTML, although other semantic content such as movies or games work as well)
    2. Basic layout (CSS, non-semantic images)
    3. Interactive/Dynamic features(JavaScript, Flash, Applets, and anything else strictly used to dynamically enhance the user experience)

This ensures graceful degradation and flexibility. In general, the larger the percentage of web applications using this model, the better.

If you're able to use Flash/Java without breaking the model, fine by me. Just don't expect me to actually utilize those features.

In many ways, using tables for layout is a way of tricking your employer. There are loads of reasons not to use tables for design purposes.

    A few examples:

    * Ease of redesign, and ability to create multiple layouts (for example: having a separate print-layout)

    * Accessibility, compatibility with speech synthesis.

    * Semantic philosophy. Ensuring compatibility with future web application evolution. Increasing product lifespan.

As you've noticed, these are all non-obvious issues. Your employer will not notice the problem until the job is long done.

While table-design might save time and money on the short term, it will cause problems in the long run. If you value your reputation as a developer, and your conscience for that matter, you should avoid table-design.

That would depend on what part of the country you are talking about.

Basically, the southern part of sweden have good enough communications to handle an oil shortage reasonably well.

The northern part, though, is a completely different story. Basically, it is an area larger than Great Britain, with a population of just over 1 million. Obviously, this means huge distances to travel, an quite a bit of car dependency.

  11. Odd statistics on Ballmer Says Vista Selling Really Well · · Score: 1

To be honest, sales are a very misleading statistic when measuring the success of Vista. What Ballmer does is simply to assume that everyone who buys Vista uses it. His calculation don't mention that very many Linux users, or perhaps even more notably, XP "downgraders", still have to buy that damn Vista license in the first place. In fact, when i bought my last computer, now running Ubuntu, i had the choice to buy a Vista licensed computer, or turn to a specialist store. It turned out the former choice was a much better deal, due to the lower hardware price. The "Windows tax" can make any release look like a success.
