    There is something which I hope could be added to Android. Basically a modification to the screen lock which works in conjunction with a Bluetooth device - as soon as the phone is out of reach of the device the screen lock would kick in - you could use any Bluetooth device, e.g. a headset. There is code implementing this available for Ubuntu, it should be possible to port this to Android.

    Another thing I like about AMD was that their processors don't melt if they get hot because they have a self preservation shutdown mode. People said Intel had this, but I melted a processor just a few months ago on SWTOR.

    I hope Tom's hardware wasn't recommending the 2500K or 2600K for virtualization. Those models are unlocked for over clocking but have the virtualization extensions disabled. I just ran into that when evaluating processors for running vmware.

    Link? Not doubting, but I just got a i7 the other day, love it so much, was thinking of building
    a low cost server with a i5. But now?

    Googled, couldn't find anything that mentioned the VT disabling.

    But yeah, I'd not expect teenagers to know about it, even in the already restricted demographics of "people who at least know how to use basic QBASIC"). I do recall I was really excited when I figured state machines when I was 12 years old, while reading z80 assembly to write trainers for Konami MSX games. I learned event-driven programming and state machines by partially reverse engineering Konami games in order to find the place where lives/ammo/health was decreased :-)

    Anyway, getting back on topic: This isn't the first time an x86 has had a stack-pointer related bug. I remember the 80386s that had the so-called "POPAD bug". That one was a bit easier to hit.

    Hopefully, AMD will be able to publish a microcode update or something to work around theirs. That's one thing modern x86s have over their predecessors: A good number of CPU bugs can be patched around with microcode updates. I believe Intel added that with the Pentium Pro, and AMD followed suit. I believe my Phenom is one of the affected parts. I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for such a patch.

    I was thinking... how the heck does he remember that flaw.

    Sorry, without you specifying the Intel processor, I call BS on that.

    If it was one of the modern chips on the 32nm or less die, it didn't happen.

    The Intel thermal protection works quite well... to the point that if the stupid
    holddowns don't do the trick on the stock cooler and your chip is just sitting
    there with no cooler... it won't kill itself.

    Lucky for you then since only the 3g and 4g models sold by carriers will use the S4 the Wifi model will be Tegra3 though the Tegra3 seems to have a slightly better GPU most tests show the S4 having a far better CPU see anandtech.com for details

    I did actually... very impressive.

    It does seem at least for now, that throwing cores at the issue,
    isn't a problem solver. The S4 was pretty impressive in HD vid
    decoding.

    I wish there was a real-world test, not just simple benchmarks.

    A script that would turn a phone on... so it will start sync'ing,
    then run a series of apps that one would 'commonly' run.

    The page loading for the browser was nearly identical to the
    Tegra 3. So, most of that action must run on a single thread
    model. And the decoding abilities helped the S4 as well.

    Being on a 28nm is a benefit too, to battery life. But I really
    just hate the idea of wasting my upgrade on a dual core,
    when I already have one.

    I guess I'll wait til the end of the year when the quad Tegra 3
    with LTE comes out.

    Ahhh, well you hit the nail on the head about 100% uptime.

    That's something only "God" will allow. Any disagreements
    with what he doles out, require 1-2 diesel generators and a
    good sized tank of diesel.

    Then the tier level of internet pipes you get in, determine
    whether they give a crap about you being down for any
    period of time.

    Essentially, 100% uptime isn't possible just due to the
    unknown. Which is why everyone brags about 5x 9's etc.

    Almost everything needs to be triple redundant (min) and
    you need to be near a top tier backbone to get a 5x 9's.

    I'm thinkin your school isn't in that ballgame.

    My new build is in the mail... or more specifically on a conveyor
    somewhere, 5 miles away, waiting to be put on a truck. Thanks UPS.

    Went with the i7-2700K (if wondering, because I got it for $50
    less than the lowest price out there, which put it under the 2600K).

    Chose an ASRock Extreme 4, Z68 Nbridge. So, I'm glad to hear
    you like their OC tools. It was one of the reasons I went with them.

    I'm breaking out an old full server tower for this setup, so I can
    put on a Corsair H80 and have room for fans:

    The problem is Tegra does not support LTE - this is a problem for sales in the USA.
    Europe will continue to get the full spec, full speed, Nvidia Tegra3 devices

    It has nothing to do with the quad core aspect of the Tegra3 and everything to do with Nvidia being stupid and not bothering to get it supported/certified by any of the LTE chipset manufacturers.

    Ahhh, wow, I wish they would have asked their power-user customers, such as myself.

    I could give two craps about LTE right now. I'd rather have the hardware that is ready
    to go, in favor of something, that I need to wait for them to "roll-out" and make usable.

    I'm a data glutton... but I'm usually near enough to a usable wi-fi that my cell speeds
    are moot. And when I'm not... I'm usually not interested in using high-bandwidth, since
    that is a large portion, directed at entertainment. [Ugh, I just saw their rationale, dammit]

    oh well, no sense crying over spilled cores.

    Well it's great that you actually have evidence that this is your problem vs. the attitude of bigger-number-must-be-better. It's interesting though how we can see the same problem and think about how to solve it differently. You see this problem and think "Throw more hardware at it." I see that and think "Needs better software".

    Ahhh but we do actually agree... 100% in fact. It is, definitely, the software.

    However.

    I am practical, in so far as... I don't have time to waste, to message a dozen app devs that
    their app isn't playing nicely with others. When I can just hope that a phone manufacturer
    hears my pleas and makes the hardware, faster.

    It's like herding cats vs gently nudging an already rolling boulder in a more favorable direction.

    MSC Patran is an aeronautical industry standard $30,000 piece of software that is occasionally CPU limited for 10 minutes at a time when I use it on an overclocked 2600k. It uses 1 core.

    You're welcome to try to change this shitty circumstance in some manner, but in the mean time, single core performance is very important (for many apps).

    What's it doin...? Seriously... I'm curious. It looks like awesome
    software, wish my "cheap" race engines warranted a $30,000
    software appy. I'd love to make my own H-beam con rods and
    custom knifed crankshafts.

    Most games are only now adding support for two cores. The gaming world is a joke, even more so than the application development world.

    I can't remember the last game I played which didn't make use of multiple cores. Of course, I'm disregarding any games which have no need to make use of multiple cores due to low processing requirements. I'm genuinely interested to hear what the most recent game lacking multicore support was.

    Me as well... a list I found, compiled by another of minimum CPU recommendations:

    BF3 -2 core
    Skyrim - 2 core
    Rage - 2 core
    Deus Ex - 4 core
    Duke Nukem - 3 core
    Witcher 2 - 4+ core
    Crysis 2 Ultra settings - 3 fast cores
    Bulletstrorm - 3 core

    I've been waiting and salivating at the promised "Quad" core offerings for smartphones.

    Why? Unless you know for sure that a regular task on your phone is CPU bound, adding more cores will just add overhead without making anything faster.

    Thanks for asking... I did actually imply, while not going further, that I was aware that my phone was CPU bound.

    And so... going further... yes, I see some processes lock both cores up tightly... for seconds at a time. 100% util
    to (all) cores, is a good sign that adding cores will help, even if partially.

    This happens most frequently... when I need to use the phone the most. Such as, turning it on, after not using it
    for let's say, over an hour. When I turn it on, all of the apps which have been happily asleep stretch their arms and
    legs and download everything they missed.

    And, I'm obviously turning the phone on cause I need to use it for something, so let's say that I already hit my
    unlocker to go to text messages, or docs, or the camera. Now, I'm standing there, looking at my task manager
    just shoot up to the top 100% util for countless seconds... it's countless if you REALLY wanted that camera
    open RIGHT THEN. If it's an extended update that the apps are doing, then I might as well just give up.

    Addressing further comments about how much I actually use my phone... my battery app says my phone is
    idle 52% of the time. So, a lot.

    My last box was a quad-core Phenom II. It served me well. There's no denying though, that Intel's current i7s (I have a 2600K) blow everything else out of the water. I fervently hope AMD will come up with something to challenge it. Competition is good.

    I'm curious, since you specified a K chip, have you OC'd it... what nbridge and mobo did you choose?

    First HTC suddenly drops its quad core chip for a dual in a phone that
    was supposed to have a quad core chip since it was leaked back in July.

    And days later, Asus drops a quad in favor of a dual core.

    Same chip was dropped.

    Someone... is keeping a secret. There is a problem with the quad core
    chip and 'something' new(er) that is appearing in the phones. I read that
    an LTE chip appeared in the "One X", while the quad core disappeared.

    Is LTE and quad core not playing nice? Are there production shortages?
    Overheating issues, battery issues?

    The whole story isn't out. I'm curious what it is. I've been waiting
    and salivating at the promised "Quad" core offerings for smartphones.
    The Samsung SIII is supposedly going to have one, but from a different
    company, their own Exynos chip. So, we won't see that quad be cut in half.

    Hopefully.

    Regardless of what the non-power users say about not needing more cores,
    I see my dual cores maxed out regularly. I need the extras, I was willing to
    sell my life, I mean soul, I mean sign a new 2 year contract for it.

    Combine this with intel's solar powered chips and you can spread them like johnny appleseed where they're needed. Or, as a variation, set them up as fileservers with copies of music, movie, and media files and seed them everywhere until the *IAA's give up the ghost for good.

    For that matter, just replace the solar powered lighting in front of intended target's residence or place of business
    with a similar unit that has all the goodies inside.

    To me hunting isn't some kind of primal test of the abilities of my body against the abilities of an animal. It's a matter of using what the land provides. It's a matter of removing animals that causes problems with our way of life as well as gathering meat. I have no wish to bring extra suffering to the animals I hunt just because I don't use the correct tools for the job. Of course it's not fair. All predators are unfair, or they would not survive. Still the vast majority of the animals we hunt gets away. A few are unlucky, or make a bad decision.

    Something I just can't help wonder is... Do you eat meat? Have you thought through the ethics of keeping animals confined for the single purpose of killing them and eating them? Compared to that I believe hunting is a better alternative from an ethical standpoint.

    One of the best, pro-hunter rational statements I've heard.
