On matters of importance to the nation and the world, should we decide based on a Koch Brother funded talking head spouting drabble that doesn't pass muster on PolitiFact, yet somehow makes the rich richer and everyone else poorer? Or should we examine things with a sense of tough love where we do what the evidence shows us is probably best, consider that a starting point, and adjust as the evidence dictates?

Back to your point - the Democrats may have been in charge when this Copyright act was passed - but has it not been upheld by the Republicans as well during the foregoing 34 years? Is this wrong? What studies or research have been done to show the affects with and with out this legislation? And with other modifications to this legislation might make it more balanced? I think these questions are best answered over feeding into the US vs THEM political system we are currently enjoying, which backs only two possible solutions, usually in nearly direct opposition to each other.

You see, Costa Rica jumped into WWI by declaring war against Germany and Japan - still, with no army, navy, or air force, mind you - and Germany sent a U Boat to go sink some of Costa Ricas navy. The German U Boat commanders tried to be sneaky and went down and around the cape of good hope and attacked from the Atlantic side - thinking that is where the navy was hiding. Tell that to FOX "news" and the Tea Party folks. I wish more people shared our way of thinking - ignore the hype and judge based on logic and reason. But sadly, the Jerry Springer culture we have fostered and the flames fanned by the Koch brothers war, lets the masses be easily swayed by emotion and fear, rather than logic. But this is nothing new, either. The term FUD, probably coined in these very forums, only puts a label on the ancient tradition.

I wonder if we can promote some type of system, through legal pressure, legislative edict, or otherwise, to rate or judge the truthfulness and helpfulness of what our politicians are blathering on about. The closest I have seen is politifact and wikileaks to some extent is trying to get the truth out there and let people judge for themselves. I think that side needs more publicity somehow - to help balance out the hype and bring a calming, logical atmosphere into play.

  16. Apple DOES have competition with peripherals on Apple Laptop Upgrades Costing 200% More Than Dells · · Score: 1

MS isn't selling hard drives and memory upgrades, which is what we are talking about here.

If you are looking for competition in the Mac Market, take a look here:

    http://dealmac.com/
    http://ramseeker.com/

That should give you plenty of competition in the Mac Marketplace for the things the article is talking about (upgrades to products). If not, stop by any computer store or consumer electronics store and see the RAM and hard drive (internal as well as external) options available.

It may be confusing since many components are able to be used on both Macs and PC's (much like some Goodyear tires can be used on both Fords and Toyotas). But that has no bearing on the two companies (MS and Apple, or Ford and Toyota) being in competition with each other. As a matter of fact, that further proves the diversity in the marketplace.

If Apple RAM and hard drives were ONLY able to be used in a Mac and nobody else could make them and they thwarted the attempts to get around the system (Ink Cartridge makers, I am looking at you), then you would be right on the money. But in this case, it is not much more than (Gawd, here I go with the car analogy again) Toyota charging 200% more for a stereo upgrade/shiny rims/undercoating/alarm/etc. than Ford.

And to answer another earlier question, yes, there are usually tighter QC specs on the Apple brand than other manufacturers. Compare a Dell 24" ultrasharp display with an Apple 23" Cinema display - the specs are the same on paper, but I have physically installed these two monitors side by side as a test for multiple designers, told them to work with them for a month, swap them with their partner, work another month, and tell me which should be the standard. Not my money, I don't care which they get - but they always choose the Apple Cinema display because the quality is just a little better during the side by side/swap tests. I also have a small pile of hard drives and RAM with Apple logos on the manufacturers stickers indicating they are made specifically to Apple specs.

I hope that helps clear up the confusion.

  22. Re:Local exploit, snuh! on Mac OS X Root Escalation Through AppleScript · · Score: 2, Insightful

#1 - We probably have 5-6 Apple XServes and will grow that to around 12-15. But there are hundreds of WinTel servers corporate wide.

#2 - We are in the midst of standardizing the Macs to corporate standards. They are around 10% - 20% of each site, but they never really had any centralized management until I came on board. Getting a standard build and removing admin rights was one of the first things I got corporate to agree to. The users really love installing their own stuff (like p2p clients, DVD ripping apps, different versions of apps) or changing things in order to 'fix' things like a down server. They complain that they don't have the ability to break their own machines anymore, but the calls for service have gone waaaay down, and their ability to interact with the corporate network, services, and their PC peers have gone waaay up. Just in numbers we have about 600 Mac users in the US, and maybe another 100 in Europe and Asia.

Most of the companies that have been acquired that had Macs, had an outside contractor come in about once a month to do maintenance, bug fixes, etc. Now they complain that it takes a couple of hours to install their scanner driver. I also had another group that used to install their own software complain to me that they all had different versions of the applications. So I removed their admin rights and put them all on the same version. Now they complain that they can't install software one at a time - which would get them back to different versions of the programs.....

The biggest secret to managing Macs is that it's really an easier job than managing PC's (IMHO), but the PC techs think it is harder. The trick is to take away admin rights and use a standard, tested build that is set up by someone who knows what they are doing. Pretty much the same rule as on the PC.

That said - and to get back on topic - ARD (http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/Apple Remote Desktop) is an invaluable tool and one of the requirements for me taking the job. Looks like the latest version of the ARD client may fix this problem. But if users are turning off the ARD client - how can I push the new, fixed client out to them?

  25. Tourist Train on Transportation Bill Sets Aside $45 Million For MagLev Train · · Score: 1

This seems to be a train of most use to a tourist, not Southern California or LV Locals (although I am sure they will be riding as well). The Disneyland Resort area (with Disneyland, California Adventure, Knotts Berry Farm, Anaheim Stadium, The Pond, etc in the near vicinity) would pick up Las Vegas guests from around the world for day trips. And Vegas would benefit just as much with a two-fer type vacation package where you can get a cheap hotel in one city, but get the benefit of the shows, sports, attractions of both cities. I am sure this is seen as a boon to the tourist trade and entertainment industries more than to the locals.

This can be a (partially or fully) privately funded project if the two major benefactors (Orange County attractions and Las Vegas casinos) pitch in a fraction of their profits. Vegas is already sponsoring free bus trips to casinos from the greater LA area - if you get 20-30 people together, they will send the bus to get you and pay the organizer a royalty (or so I have heard from a number of people). It's not a bad day trip - except for that 4 hour bus ride each way that cuts into your day.

Someone suggested building more local casinos in California - but I don't see that as a viable solution since indian casinos (gambling is illegal in CA) are limited in the numbers of machines they can have (we just voted to increase that number, but not eliminate it), and is typically limited to only one casino per property with 1-2 hours of drive time to get to the next casino. In Vegas if you are feeling unlucky, you can stagger next door to the next place. To draw an analogy, this is like comparing a 7-11 to a WalMart.

I think the technology of the MagLev and the speed is needed not only for practicality, but for the wow factor that will attract the tourists looking for something different. I've seen the beach - now lets go visit Paris, Italy, New York, Pirates, castles, buffets, shows, and more for the cost of a train ride - a 300MPH train (or however fast it will go). I can see the marketing flyers now - "Fly to Las Vegas at 300 MPH, 2 inches above the ground!"

With Vegas and Disney involved you would think finding would be the EASY part. I bet that initial $45 million is just seed money for the poker tables, roulette wheels, keno, etc. One god weekend and we can have this thing funded... :)
