I recall the Wired article on Chiat Day - the employees were not happy campers and they eventually abandoned the effort - perhaps too ahead of the curve? A very funny/sad article.

Not so much a cost issue but up until the mid-90's the PITA factor was a major hit in setting up a domain. No hosting services, so you'd need your own server. Private lines were way expensive and difficult to get set up with the phone company. No DSL so you'd need ISDN (56k! Wicked fast!) or bone up for a T1 or partial T1 which could run you $1000/month easy. Not to mention all the paperwork you'd have to submit to interNIC, etc.
The best revenge on all the domain squatting is that all the "now a household word" domains use words no one would think were valuable - yahoo, google, etc ad infinitum. Have you had a need to visit computer.com? telephone.com? television.com?
In my company it's SOP for PCs to be left on overnight, that way updates, patches, installations, virus scans and so on can be run while the user is away (and even reboot the PC if needed.) This isn't as easy with laptops that are often unplugged from the network much of the time. (Even the ones used in the office are often locked in a cabinet overnight to prevent theft.) Either the updates need to be run manually or they need to be run after startup (leaving the user screaming "Help Desk! Why is my laptop so slow? Is the internet down?)

Just add a mouse and disable the touchpad (or just put a post-it on it.)
If this movie is released, we'll be eating our own babies for breakfast.
