EXTRA! EXTRA! in the future things will be smaller!!... The LA Times article seems pretty mundane to me. Is there a better article out there? there must be
this will send china-phobia in the US into a national spotlight. I wonder if this issue will come up in presidential campaigns. Some of the canidates really like to trash China(G.Bush). This really could lead to campaign promises that could benefit NASA. It could also result in anti-China sentiment from the uneducated masses. Did anyone out there who went to school in the US learn a single thing about China? Americans are severely under-educated about the people's republic. This will chnge in the next ten years as the US goes searching for enemies (and probably finding a good one).
I hope the capability to download my experience come hand in hand with the capability to upload experience. Having information jammed into my brain sounds, well.. awesome. It bet it's quite a rush. It also blurs the define lines of expereince and self blah blah blah, what a bunch of redundant crap.----- I didn't write this, the other me did
Why does the fact that Amazon is defending their investment make what they are doing any more admirable? Aren't some things more important than investments? not to Amazon obviously. It may be obvious that the best way for Amazon to protect its investments is to enforce its dubious patent. Does that make it obvious that you or I should support Amazon? Of course not. The two issues are unrelated. There is nothing inherintly admirable about protecting and investments. Do you respect a pimp after he smacks around his bitch?
I can't blame Amazon for filing obvious patents in order to protect their own interests(if they don't somebody else will, then Amazon would be sued by a competitor). But what they are doing with the patent is clearly a sign that they are seeking a monopoly. They should be boycotted. And the U.S. Patent office needs more reform than campaign financing. But what is leading Amazon to these predatory tactics? Could the fact that it overvalued company that has no projected revenue in the near future? If Amazon doesn't can't protect its obvious patents there is nothing special about Amazon. That said, there is nothing special about Amazon. I don't buy anything from Amazon anyway, so all I have to do to boycott them is nothing
I can't decide how I feel about this sort of protest. Of course I think its funny, and on some level I think the ABA or whatever they're called deserve a taste of their own medicine. And it generates good publicity, but it is an inherently destructive practice. There is something to be said for a good old fashion mob carrying signs and shouting slogans. Of course the people who really care about internet censorship would never get of their collective asses an organize a protest. That shit is for hippies. right? wrong. cracking government websights won't generate sympathy with the general population. Getting shot with rubber bullets and tear gas will. So everybody get your pitch forks and torches. "We're here we're queer, we dont' want anymore bears" -Homer Simpson
good point on the guns. Television and videogames are no less violent in say... England, but they have effective gun control and a lot less shooting deaths. Trying to stop violent media sources is ridiculous. And it is not a new problem. I just finished read Edmund Spnecers The Fairy Queen which was published in 1596. You better believe it glorifies violence, and from a christian perspective. How many people over the last four centuries have killed somebody because of the Fairy Queen? I don't think violent TV and video games has nearly as significant a de-sensitizing effect as news media. Real violence makes kids violent, not fake violence. We have a destructive culture- our wealth was founded on violent oppression. Violence has always been part of our heritage. Blaming it on video games is absurd.
There are some interstibng similarities between creating life and abortion. Both have distinct advantages and both lead to outrage in religious communities. There is no objective way to judge the morality of either. I wonder if these scientists were sued, if existing abortion legislation would factor into the court's decision..
I hope the synthisize the bacteria and get a lot of press. There are some states in the US that mandate that creation is taught in schools. Some schools aren't allowed to use the word evolution (they use "change over time" as a substitute). If I were a parent in one of these states I would file a law suit. Some people will always fear technology but they SHOULDN"T BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO INTERFERE. My guess is that the open discussion they propose is only for public relations sake. It is a good move to stave off the outrage of the superstitious. People freak-out when there "religious leaders" freak out. If people hear that "religious leaders" are involved it will quell their fear. Could this technology lead to the production of biological weapons? probably. But humans already possess this capability. Wouldn't it be great if we had the opposite capability?. Maybe religious groups should be more concerned with scientists who make incurable strains of anthrax than the guys who want a chemical definition of life. We don't need a chemical definition of life to show that God and Creation are illogical concepts. People have maintained their faith against overwhelming odds for centuries. to supress technology is to turn ones back on humanity.
There is seven or eight of them left. they live collectively in vermont or new hampshire, make furniture, own a lot of land and are filthy rich (considerring they are shakers). How do I know this? I heard it on NPR. that proves it it true
I hope other electro-activists don't start copying the electro-hippes (what a goofy name. at least it isn't e-hippies). Next week the electro-moral majority will be announcing electro-sit-ins for their least favorite porn sites (I'll bet they hate gay, inter-racial pron the most). Remember the anti-scientology site that was shut down? Maybe its creator will return the favor to L Ron Hubbard (Elron? who cares) by spreading the word about an electrono-sit-in at dianetics.com or whatever they call it. Maybe internet explorer 6.0 will have an automatic netscape sit-in function that is turned on buy defualt( but is easy to turn off). It's not funny. the electronico- sit-in or whatever the hell the ex-hippies call it is akin to book burning. I'm curious to know what the law is in this situation.
