    "Software should be free..everything should be free, including the BIOS". Nice concept, but reality is we live in what's called a zero-sum game. We as humanity have a finite amount of resources, which means that if I'm going to expend resources by writing software I need to get something in return, in order to provide for my family.

    Open up the architecture and you'll never have to write a BIOS again.

    I think that the idea that microcode from the items in our house should be forcibly Open Source is very congruent with a Free Society.

    getting lynx installed is a real pain

    # cd /usr/ports/www/lynx
    # make install

    or perhaps you'd prefer a pre-compiled binary

    # pkg_add ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packa ges-stable/All/lynx-2.8.5.tgz

    n.b. you'll have to remove your own spaces though =)

    The build environment is not the same as the deployment environment.

    If your Web application is so tied to one Unix environment that it is impossible to move then I suggest you have problems of your own making.

    If it is tuning the server you are worrying about then one wonders how Ebay manages ?

    I'm with you.

    I've been coding in PHP every day for that last 5 years.

    PHP is a mature macro langauge. Like something you would have on your calculator.

    That said, wouldn't it be better if Firefox came bundled with a Flash player, etc., or its installer detected a need for customary extensions and could install at the same time? There's no technical reason why it couldn't happen.

    please, leave it on a menu somewhere and off by default, I don't even want a flash player auto-compiled in the package or downloaded during browser install unless I ask it to.
