The first two movies were the best and carried the story through even though ewoks were a bit lame.
The problem is George Lucas wrote the screenplay and directed the prequels. The Empire Strikes Back is one of the best Star Wars movies and had an independent director and screenplay writers.
The prequels suck because by that stage there was no one around to George that he had his hand on it.
