    Some comments really do look like they've been generated by Eliza. This is especially true of the intentionally vague ones. It's hard to evaluate something that by it's very nature can't be quantified.

    Been there, done that. That includes owning Macs and working with real Unix. If you are a power user, you will just find Macs annoying. If you are a serious old school Unix user, you will find it's certification laughable.

    Although the real problem with MacOS is not MacOS itself. It's the hardware. You get stuck with strange novelty form factors targeted to n00bs. They don't even have a proper workstation model any more.

    I have more than one TV.

    Even if they were all "smart" and I liked the "smart bits", I would still want to impose a single interface on all of it. That's cheap an easy to do with an external box. That would be quite bothersome otherwise.

    At that point, I just went with a streamer. I don't pay any more than I did before. My Amazon collection could "go poof" someday but cable didn't confer genuine permanent ownership either.

    Smart TVs are quite INFERIOR when it comes to "convenient features" that "normal people" expect. Not that "normal people" have any clue about streaming anyways.

    Primarily Smart TVs are overwrought devices for force feeding you commercials and exposing your home network to spying and hackers.

    The client device isn't always powerful enough to handle the target codec. It may need special hardware support in order to manage. That may not be present or it could be limited. Modern codecs are more like "codec families" with tons of options and "support levels".

    A proper PC is still the only real answer here. It's about your ability to control the device more than it is the license of the relevant software.

    Win10 can't handle my legacy printers. The vendors don't provide their own drivers anymore and none are available from Microsoft. What they do have in the way of generic workarounds relevant to each device are unsuitable because they don't account for older protocol versions.

    The UI is an improvement compared to 8 and 8.1.

    Office in particular is also something that legacy users like to hold onto.

    Plus two of those are just more Microsoft. So you're argument basically comes down to "Microsoft is going to abuse you anyways, so you might as well think happy thoughts and pull your pants down".

    ...except it's actually getting that system. It's called Vulcan.

    Besides, the proliferation of mobile and console gaming platform already means that DirectX is becoming less and less relevant. Unless you're a stubbornly Windows only shop, you're bound to be in a position to support more platforms as a lot of the alternatives are much closer to each other.

    I download the longer videos because I have a preferred video player interface. I'm not going to bother with YouTube for anything more than a few minutes long.

    Even if something is on Netflix or Prime, I would rather use my own video player and a local copy.

    Google? Perhaps you've heard of it. This is not the mid 90s anymore. You can find all sorts of stuff on Google that used to be the domain of proprietary printed manuals or very expensive service contracts.

    Of course there are people incapable of doing ANYTHING. They can't even plunge a toilet on their own. These people are truly helpless (and a big pain in the ass) and it doesn't matter what the domain is.

    I am inherently suspicious of a hard sell. There are any number of media narratives that fit this description but Trump is king here. The objections from the media are so numerous and so shrill, I am tempted to give the guy a chance.

    Ultimately, I will see how he does in the debates.

    Although even if you take everything the media has said about him at face value, he's still the best Republican candidate. The rest were even worse (even Kaisich).

    Furthermore, the GPL was specifically engineered with jackasses in mind. It creates a framework where entities can cooperate on equal terms despite them being natural enemies and being otherwise un-equal.

    The truth is that the VAST majority of women have no interest in the rules or roles that feminists want to impose upon them. It has nothing to do with "conservatism". Women freely choose to engage in objectifying themselves. It was one of the earliest forms of women's lib.
