  1. Re:Stack Overflow on Writing Documentation: Teach, Don't Tell · · Score: 1

Well, I am going to defend Stack Overflow here, because I think it fills a very useful niche, which is "what is the best way to do X." There is no way that a "single-source" documentation, such as the API documentation or a book, can foresee all those specific questions. I do not go to stackoverflow to search for information, but very often when I use google to search, stackoverflow has the first useful information. As opposed to a straight wiki, what makes it useful is the (slashdot-like) moderation system.

How often do you really use Stack Overflow? They almost always close "what is the best way to do X" questions. It's quite annoying in my opinion.

The following were found from a Google search for: stack overflow "what is the best way to"

  2. Re:Better plots? on Hollywood's Love of Analytics Couldn't Prevent Six Massive Blockbuster Flops · · Score: 1

I actually don't need any plot. Give me bigger explosions, awesome effects, and a wild ride! I don't care if I can predict the rest of the movie halfway through as long as the rest of it is fun to watch. Explosions and effects are plenty fun! I hate dramas, and I don't need to think about my movies. Real life has enough drama, and I do enough thinking at work. If I'm watching a movie, I'm trying to escape.

However, though I really want to see these movies, I haven't had the opportunity. It's summer so I'm usually trying to be outside. Besides that, I like to enjoy my movies with beer or some other drink. The closest theater that lets me do that is about an hour away. Or I can wait for Redbox and watch it at home. Both choices have their own inconveniences. So in the end, even though I enjoy Hollywood movies, they still aren't making much money off me.

  3. Re:Shut The Fuck Up on Glibc Is Finally Free Software · · Score: 1

That's probably a troll but yes there are people who seriously get this upset over a software license. Well, they don't precisely get upset over the license itself. They get upset that anyone else would use a license that they would not use. The fact that your choice to use whatever license you like for what you create does not prevent them from using any license they like for what they create won't give them a moment's pause.

Unfortunately, that's not entirely true. The GPL seeks to restrict the license you may use for any software you make that depends on the covered software. If someone else chooses GPL, and you want your software to use their software, suddenly you have a lot less licenses to choose for your own software.

I had to point out that most hypocrites and freaks don't consider themselves to be hypocrites or freaks.

Yeah, and while we're at it, we really need to rename the planets. Those gods don't exist either. And the constellations! So annoying!

Seriously, calling a *particle* the God Particle has so little to do with whether he actually exists that it's not even worth worrying about.
