Bowie, its not like VA is stockpiling open source software and is going to suddenly pick up and leave. If youre so paranoid about VA and them "stealing" free software (how exactly do you do that?), why havn't they done it yet?
Oh, i know, theyre luring us into a false sense of security, and the *poof* theyre going to rob us blind. damn, we should remove our software from sourceforge asap, wouldnt want them taking free software from what is basically a bigass ftp site. lets put our software on our own sites! yeah, thatll prevent them from putting fully paid professionals on it!!
As for sourceforge/privacy/security, If YOU dont like it, YOU dont have to use it. Most users arent extremly concerned with it, and just need a place to put some html, cvs and such. If perhaps you could get over the fact that sourceforge is kinda cool and a big sucess and has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU, maybe we could get something worthwhile out of this, but as it is, VA bashing and cyncism is all that appears, what a shame.
Id suggest Perl, if youd like to introduce them to both *nix and programming at the same time. Its robust, easy, and (in theory) cross platform, so if they refuse to use the command line, they could do it in windows. Plus, using Tk (in X or Windows) or Gtk+, they can create graphical applications that are a bit more familiar.
ill point out that you dont HAVE to use extened partitions... a disk does allow 4 primarys.. 1 windows, 1/, 1 swap, and if you wanted, one/whatever....
- i havnt tried corel linux, so go ahead and complian that my statement is without basis, but imho, most 'Based on' distros suck.
mandrake, corel, stormix, and to a lesser extent turbo linux are 'Based on' redhat or debian, and really dont provide anything intuitivly NEW to the distro scene..
all they really seem to do is provide new install techniques, maybe packege with a different "user environment" [ie GNOME vs KDE, i await a distro that ships with XCFE as default *grin*], and perhaps some new apps or a different set of applications [again, GNOME apps vs KDE apps].
wheres the difference? what is so fundamentaly different between, for example, redhat and mandrake? NOT MUCH.
im not complaining about a lack of distros mind you, we seem to have plenty. nor am i complaining about lack of NEW distros [Rock linux, or the distros that can install from windows], i think there are just too many "Based on" distrobutions. unless they provide something really completly new, and just used another distro as footing.. theyre really the same thing...
imho, we need more NEW distros, ones that provide NEW ideas and approaches to things such as kernel managment and package installing [altho, i prefer source *grin*]. not ones that just copy pre existing ideas and so forth.....
- im quite curious why there are so many poorly made "desktop environments" and not ONE good one i really dont see the attraction of GNOME or KDE or the rather lame XFCE.. who cares? desktop evironments arent really that cool, and dont provide any real important features to an X station... perhaps if all these desktop environment writers would get together... write one that actually works and provides features that improve your X session....
