Agree that Device Bay is probably key to Firewire's success. (Those who don't know, Device Bay is a spec which would allow drives to be universally snapped in, hot, with no cables, screws, jumpers, etc.)
I thought 1394 has a standard plug so that we won't have go go through the connector hell that is SCSI. (At least 5 external plugs by my count.)
Over the years, I've seen Parallel ethernet adapters, joysticks, modems, vidcap devices, cameras, scanners, SCSI adapters, drives, and even sound cards.
What do all of these devices have in common? A bitchy setup and endless driver and BIOS incompatiblities. If you've been through this and keep buying this crap you might as well write IDIOT on your head with a permenant marker. Then go to the flea market and buy and old Adaptec ISA SCSI board for $5. Trust me, it's alot better.
I would think that to get Outlook to work, they would need to reverse engineer the MAPI API set. I'd be real interested if Wine could ever do this because MAPI is part of the extend Windows 'API' that really only exists to support their own applications.
MS has changed MAPI in the past when it's served their market needs with Exchange server. One would think that Wine would be playing eternal catch-up to get Outlook 99, 00, 01, 02 to work.
