I have a problem speaking up for myself. Generally I am shy. Sometimes I say some swearwords and come across unprofessional. Still working on it... Got me fired once.
your post reminds me of the oxyclean commercial guy. I think he is kind of annoying. But yeah, I agree with you about the solution for cleaning and protecting circuits.
Then it's the schools job to set security policies in Windows to disallow such things. Setting up computer labs and just expecting people not to run any other programs on the computer will be only slightly more effective than dropping money on the street and expecting people not to pick it up. Yeah but when you disallow installation of programs you start to tread in hot water. You can hurt other programs meant to run on the machines from running at all or running properly. Yes... I know its up to schools to set the policies up correctly but it is often not done correctly. I find that high schools tend to be more lax in security or implement such restrictive rules its ridiculous. I'm currently attending college and stay away from using their machines. I do all my work on my own machine. Yes... I know thats not always possible for others.
I used to use Firefox during high school and during the first year of college. I simply ran it off the USB flash stick. It was the install folder of Firefox. I installed it at my house. Whenever I ran the thing it would bring up the import wizard because it never remembered my settings.
However, as the previous poster mentioned its NOT OK to install/run anything foreign on school computers or at your job unless allowed in the policy. It may seem harmless or can be but should you get caught you can face serious punishment. It is also in the teachers right to dictate what the student may or may not do.
So... I make it a rule for myself to not change any settings, run any of my apps (firefox..others), boot to Linux, connect to servers at home, etc... In school you may get suspension or detention but in real life you can face fines, jailtime and a mark against your record which can hurt future job opportunities...
If this proves to be true I will be so glad. The HL franchise is by far my favorite. I love HL series and hope it continues for a long time. Otherwise it shall be a very disappointing day for me.:-)
I know a few people who also feel that design is a wasted practice. I feel otherwise. I feel that design is the crucial phase in creating a program. Coding comes second when you put it all together. For me if I design a program I can see the larger picture of how it goes together. I have no job experience coding but thats what I think and I may be wrong. I think the exception to design time may be Creating smaller programs. Am I wrong?
I think he does make a good point that donating money to feed those poor people is a good initiative but giving them a laptop opens up a whole world the poor can connect to that otherwise would never get that opportunity. I think that both initiatives are good. OLPC is doing a great thing and I am rooting for them. There are already other organizations that donate food and money towards hunger relief http://www.savethechildren.org/emergencies/africa/africa-hunger-relief-1.html... Google search has more... Why should OLPC have to do both? Just pick one and do it a good job at one.
Well put... I know this first hand when I used to work in CompUSA in Tarrytown NY for about a year. When I was working there the store was the best in the region and we got free black 2g ipod nanos. Our stock was pretty available but it did have problems keeping track of everything. I worked at the tech services counter as a service writer. Basically that involves checking computers in and out. We used to use seibel 7x and it was such a poor system. Mistakes were easy to make and took forever to get finished with one customer. Was very agrivating to get anybody processed correctly. Eventually I followed suit with my other co-workers and did thinks half ass in order to keep up with customer flow. Besides I was getting paid $9/hour. What a load of shit for the amount of effort I put into this job. Not only did the job and pay suck they wanted you to work crazy hours. Things like the midnight madness deal never really made sense to me. After 11pm there were hardly any customers in the place. The prices were always higher than anywhere else. I felt bad for the customers so I started to fix small issues myself at the counter without writing their service tickets up. I got plenty of tips for that which could of got me fired. Then for items customers would ask from me I would redirect them to other places which sell items cheaper like newegg.com or somewhere else online. Eventually I got fed up with everything and left. The last straw was yet another angry customer coming in to yell at me for something my manager fucked up. So I picked up my belongings and left and never came back. No 2 week notice or anything. After that the place closed down in 30 days along with over half of the stores as mentioned in TFA. So to me I am FUCKING glad this horrible store shut down.
When I was running XP regularly 4 years ago I ran it with 256MB. Then went to 512MB. I never had to many issues running it with that much RAM. I suspect they might incorporate some DRM when "shrinking" it down to run on the XO laptop. I hope OLPC keeps up the good work and keeps getting more people to purchase them and then we shall see a new generation that is not plagued with M$'s vendor lock-ins. I would buy one but right now I'm tight on money.
As I see it a consumer that wants to buy a machine that is prebuilt always comes preloaded with M$'s OS and normally nothing else. Now, I myself have not bought a preloaded machine in years since I build my own and install Linux and WinXPPro on it to dual boot so I really don't know all the options out there. I am glad Vista is having such a hard time in the market and that large companies like Dell are offering other options like Linux on the desktop. But for the most part everyone has just the option of M$ OS. My last job was to work as a tech support guy at a social services company that was non-profit. I supported the mainly supported the staff. For the most part they had to use internal web sites that would only work with IE6 and other crappy and obsolete proprietary software that required Windows. We could not use anything Linux based and the pointy haired bosses had a very closed mindset. Anytime I mentioned a Linux alternative or the word Linux they would get a bit angry. Sorry to get a bit off topic but I think you get my point....
When I was designing my personal web site I came across the decision to add hacks to my work in order to support IE or comply with the W3C standards. I ended up opting to go for standards. Otherwise I would have to fuss with a lot of If user is using IE6 do this. Or make a IE only page and run the IE code when detected. As it is right now FireFox, Konqueror, Opera, and Safari display the web site the best. IE6 not at all and IE7 surprisingly displays it pretty well with some flaws. I noticed differences with FF for Windows and FF for Linux. The site uses lots of CSS. People I know personally that use Windows do not like to use IE7 and have either stuck with IE6 or migrated to another browser. Mostly FF. BTW I'm look forward when Firefox 3 becomes stable and released.

Thats all I gotta say... Peace!
First post? No I did not RTFA yet. I am in such a rush to make first post which I doubt I will get it. Glas BBC iplayer welcomes Linux though.

oooooooooooohhhhh... I did not proofread my writing. Thanks for correction!
