I remember buying my first gameboy way back when. It was before they were released to the entire market. They used to have Nintendo stores in the malls and the one in Bremerton (not sure, its been a while) would always release the stuff a little early. Fond memories, tetris and super mario land were my first two games. A little tidbit on the Gameboy advance, in an interview somewhere I heard Nintendo say that it could have released the system already however the gameboy platform is still doing so well they don't want to eat into those profits yet. Therefor they delayed the gameboy advance for year. I wonder if the screens will cause a further delay?
The movie talked about a Chimera virus that would cause your blood cells to disolve, give flu like symptoms, and be uncurable after 20 hours. I am not a medical expert by any means but doesn't this sound a lot like the ebola virus. They never discussed how it was transmitted but if I remember right the ebola virus is transmitted through contact by blood. There was also an airborn strain that only affected chimps. So much for the super virus, its been around for a while. Feel free to correct me if I have any facts wrong, I am going off memory.
I forsee two ways of successfully stopping this. The first as was said is making it unprofitable. The second is once the system is in place to have the legality of it challenged. As I am not a legal expert I will focus on its profitablility. Rather than creating a contreversy through media focus on their customers, the schools. Because it is the parents the schools will listen more closely to the parents need to be well informed of the issue and motivated to ask the schools not to use this.
From a business perspective the parents can gain a first mover advantage. By putting a bad taste about the Pinkerton Group's plans the group will be forced to address these issues if it wants customers. I would highly recommend if there are students reading this that they go through the archives and prepare themselves as JonKatz did. Then discussing this with your parents and school officials who may be supportive (when discussing the issue I recommend always keeping a level head and suggesting a break should tempers flair).
Although it is a copout attitude the company is simply responding to their markets demands. Not an easy task but change the market place. Make this an issue that PTA and school boards face now, not when offered the system. All of these are just my personal ideas, I don't know if these will work but I hold a certain amount of optimism that schools will improve because of the attention they are getting.
I am a business student. Almost any other business student out there will answer that the goal of a company is to increase shareholder wealth. In one of my classes we were exploring this statement further. The key is the word wealth. Profits are a subset of wealth but there is much more. The overall quality of life can also be included wealth. When a company is evaluating decisions it uses wealth as a criteria however in most cases it is just profits. Although naive, the possiblity exists for companies to evaluate their decisions on the broader sense of the word wealth. In this case moral issues can have equal priority as profits. Will AOL use wealth as I have described it? No, the The investors are looking only for a return on profits and AOL must react to them because they are the owners of the company and provide the cash flow necessary to expand. Although the companies are directly responsible for their actions (i.e. Microsoft) they are also reacting the whims of invesotrs. There is a lot more to think about than just whether a company is good, bad and profitable vs. unprofitable.
Financial Aid and laptops

Many people have raised the issue that requiring laptops is prejudicial to people with lower incomes. I was speaking with an MIS professor last year and his response was that financial aid could help pay for it. If a university requires a laptop for all students it is a mandatory cost like books and housing and will be added to the total estimated costs of attending college. This will then raise the amount of financial aid a student is able to receive. Whether it be a loan or grant the ability exists for every student to own a laptop.
On the news last night they said it would be released Fall 2001. Bill Gates was saying the goal is to get the game manufacturers to have a year to build "great" games. Even though the 600 mhz chip will be out of date for computer systems think of the low cost in manufacturing them. This is where Sony is rumored to face difficulties, they are operating at a very low profit margin and possibly a loss. Early on, I read an estimate that the cost of a playstation 2 is about $600. Granted as they produce more and become more efficient the cost will drop however at release time Microsoft's units may easily hit the under $200 mark.
Interesting fact, the first words ever spoken over a telephone were A Hoy Hoy (no idea on spelling) which is how Mr. Burns always answers the phone. Evidence of a deeper level of humor in the Simpsons.
I am just starting to look for DSL ISPs and obviously I would like a good one. What are some good questions to ask them to help me ensure they are not giving me the same old runaround.

First of all, congratulations. Somewhere in life I heard this little saying, and it seemed appropriate to share.
Marriage is Love
Marriage is an Institution
Love is Blind
Therefore marriage is an institution for the blind.
