    I agree with you, web applications are overrated, and overused. Certain things should be left to native code, or at least a decent virtual machine. Anyone else notice that our processors get faster, our internet access gets faster, and even still, web applications get slower and slower?

    I don't like the Chrome browser and I don't need an OS named Chrome that is actually Linux with a lame web browser bolted on as the front end.

    That reminds me, who is going to sue Google for distributing their OS without choice of browser... United States vs Microsoft

    At least when it comes to driving. The NASA guys are pretty smart, and I'm sure other tasks are as autonomous as they could make them with the technology they had when they built them.

    What a comparison. It's almost as fast, but not quite as fast, as a much earlier and slower version of the fastest browser.

    The article said they should fly at roughly 25 knots for the flight around the world. I assume this is so it can fly and recharge in the day, and fly on batteries at night, which leads me to believe it can fly considerably faster, but only if night travel is not required in the same flight.

    I believe the "75%" is supposed to refer to the cow's percentage of the total methane produced by dairy farmers alone. Another article (posted by someone else above) says dairy cows produce 2% of the worlds methane emissions, but cows are the largest methane source for dairy farmers.

    Just another reason not to trust any "facts" the media gives us without further investigation.

    I absolutely love the artist's concept, but I sincerely doubt it will look much like that by the time the engineers and builders get finished with it. It doesn't look very cost effective.

    I'll go ahead and patent an onscreen keyboard with smallish squares that have a gap of approximately 1/2 the width of the key between each one. I'm pretty sure that will have the same effect as the triangles, and people won't be so distracted by the ridiculous design. Maybe I'll patent circles too just in case.

    I thought the same thing. Layout and all is googleish.

    At least they did one thing right... they used Adobe Flash instead Microsoft Silverlight. I may be forced to work in windows, but I refuse to install silverlight just to go to a microsoft website that has a video on it.

    Spare Battery.

    I don't see how being stranded without a power source (after using up a spare battery) is any different than being stranded without a chemical source (after using up the chemicals).

    They could always carry a hand crank charger instead. I'd like to see one of those to recharge the chemical communication device.

    All arguments asside, let's assume it is 100,000,000 years old, the approximate time at which termites split from cockroaches (so says the article, I didn't check). Does that mean this termite looks more like a cockroach, or did the cockroaches look more like termites then? I would love to see a termite the size of a modern day cockroach, or even an adult cockroach the size of a modern day termite. Either would be fascinating.

    Why do these articles always tell us how difficult it was to do something in space because they are going so ridiculously fast? When taken relatively, they were practically sitting still while docking.

    I know there are all kinds of other factors and I know it takes a lot of math to even get to the right orbit at the right time and speed to even see the Hubble, but after that, it ought to be relatively simple considering the lack of any unwanted or unexpected force on the crafts. I'm pretty sure it's much more difficult to land a jet on an air craft carrier, but I wouldn't know for sure.

    I couldn't believe they didn't have anti-aliasing before! I wrote a complete vector graphics library with anti-aliasing in a month in my spare time, why did it take them so long?

    on another note, why do most of the new features scream commonsense? or is it just me?

    not that i've been to Norton's forums or anything, but i would assume by registering on Norton's forum, you agreed to their TOS which probably state they can censor anything they want and ban anyone they want for any reason.

    Though I'll admit covering up something like this is stupid... a straight answer would be better PR.

    Exactly. This should include not making promises to your customers without consulting the team, and not consulting the team and then disregarding their time and effort estimates just because the customer wants it now. When you try to motivate your team with impossible deadlines, it tends to have the opposite effect. Hopefully you learned this from Dilbert, if nowhere else.

    I didn't know black holes are considered theoretical. I'm no astronomer, or physicist, or anything like that, but I was pretty certain we had concluded there are black holes in our universe, due to these voids we view that appear to suck up all light passing them. I thought the only theoretical part was that we can only speculate on the actual make up and physical properties of them since we can't see or touch them. I'm fairly certain they are not actual, physical, holes, but I thought we had proved something existed that we labeled as "black holes."

    just my public school powered opinion.

    How very true, making things slightly more difficult, but on the other hand, what risk management is without strange and unpredictable problems? Hopefully someone made a nice flow chart to handle those issues, using short timeouts and catching invalid responses as part of the solution. I would have (hopefully!). Although as a customer, $0.00 shipping sounds good :) Might make me come back too, if they don't try to charge me later for it.

    If it's important enough they should have a backup. I know it's not always within budget, but their website doesn't have to crash because the USPS service is unavailable, it could simply fall back to an acceptable solution, such as a fixed price, an estimation table, or an error message that says the USPS shipping estimator is down and shipping will be calculated at the time of shipment, or they can try again later. Yeah, they'll lose some business, but they can lose less business with a decent backup.

    I agree with babbs. It's a great staring point without requiring much of a background in computer science. It begins with a basic explanation of how brains function, moving on to good explanations of various methods for modeling that function. It's more math based than anything else, but includes source code also.

    i disagree partly. I ONLY check post on the client IF I feel the need to stop the post and display an error message immediately. Otherwise i see it as wasted code prone to bugs because if you check your post on the client side, you ALSO have to check it on the server side anyway (even if only for security reasons) which gives you 2 different copies of the same code that you have to make changes to. twice as many places to make mistakes and create security holes.
