My son actually went backwards since last year! He was performing double-column addition/subtraction operations in year 3 last year and now in year 4 is only working on single-column operations.
Multiplication and division are also pale shadows of what they were in my time. (I'm 39).
After chatting to his teacher they have been told to try and make maths "fun", and approximation answers are treated as good enough!
