Well perhaps its because the goverment wouldnt know a security hole if it bit them on the ass. They pay people like myself to fix them. They have no actually intellectual computer talent in the goverment. They would have to employee contractors. Futhur, No one would tolerate it. Id probably fix a hole if they told me but id send them a letter telling them to go fuck themselves if they suggested i remove a machine from the net. Besides, coperate america wouldnt tolerate it. they wont hire enough people to check there machines but damned if they will let them be down. Most would rather take the risk of the hacker and really dont care in the end. Then theres the issue of the real world where the US Goverment A: Doesnt own the net and B: isnt well liked by other countrys. Thats why we pay people to be our friends. I thank the stars that there are plenty of other countrys who dont tolerate US bullshit laws. If they US wants to ban me a citizen from something I want Ill just get it from europe or asia. You really want them setting up packet customs? You would have to wait for some lame ass customs agent who can hunt and peck 4 words per minute to clear your packets. You'd be waiting 8 to 10 weeks to get a to euro website. Sorry but this is the stupidest idea i have heard in a long time. Ranks up there with shaving your head with a cheese grater.

    > I hope that you, as an end-user are not penalised for @Home's poor management. Part of responsible interneting is switching ISP's when your isp is irrisponsible and unresponsive. Most geeks, not normal users, will switch ISP's when the bandwidth sucks. Unforntunatly not enough are willing to go through the hassle of switching because of spammers and open relays. If your with your ISP then your supporting your ISP, by giving them money, and therefore supporting there decision to deal with, or not deal with spam. It should be the same as a bandwidth issue. A phone call saying I'm leaving and this is why to the support manager is usually my final step. Sure @home provides cable modems and thats nice and all but there are other services, I have a crappy cable modem right now. Im leaving the service as soon as my T1's in. I got fed up, I tried dsl, after 9 weeks of them not being able to get it right, Northpoint communications sucks, I said screw it and went with reliable. As soon as bell atlantic (yeah they suck too) wires my local loop my cable modem is gonna be slammed down on the desk at my local cable modem provide with some nasty words about QOS. Sure the UDP causes the users to suffer but its the users fault for sticking with a ISP that supports spam. You dig your own grave in this situation. Switch to make a statement. Money moves and ISP. One person leaving is not enough. As a responsible geeks its everyones reasponsibility to let the isp know when there doing wrong.

Well I believe that the market hype will die in the 2000's. Right now you got these ipos of companys going through the roof because there associated with linux and eventually thats gonna die out. But i doubt that will have any effect on the general enthusium of your average unix user. With microsoft releasing 2000 which btw is not full compatabile with all the games which sorry enough to say is a serious driving force in the industry there will be a mass defection. Sure linux runs even less but it shows potential. Speaking with a coworker of mine who would be best described as a NT god he made the comment "Im working on learning linux now. right now microsoft buys my bread but ill bet on linux in a few years". The problem is microsoft is living in fear of linux competing with NT, not with 98 persay because 98 is a different market. The problem is 2000 is NT so they just bumped the competition up to a new level which will hype linux even more as people get more fustrated with NT. You think my mother needs account based security on her home system????? No, 98 was great for the users. I think my mother will stick to 98 for those concerned but those that buy new systems and or upgrade will be faced with the "Now im using NT" delima and those that have hesitated to try linux I supect will stop hesitating. Me? Well hell, im sticking to solaris...

Being that most judges still dont know what email is, let alone how to read it maybe we should make it a point to get the address of the courthouse of the presiding judges in these cases as well as his or her name and come up with some spiffy professionally written letter (in other words i wont write it) explaining to the judge why we think the law suit sucks. I know we had some laws passed a few years back against frivilous lawsuits and if we included that it might start a judge thinking. If we all sign a copy and snail mail it to the judge or even better certified snail mail it to the judge he will be innodated with it and be forced to at least acknowldge it. If we get 1000 people to send the same certified letter to the same judge the post office will make a stink and instant press. Press loves that kinda crap. I think we have to come down to a medium that a judge can understand. Email will just get deleted or ignored. Most of you who are email savy know it will just be viewed like a spam or a DOS attack. Paper is something that sits in front of you, and if its certified, hes gotta sign for every copy that comes in and he doesnt he puts his job at risk.

How about a disclaimer attached to every tcpip connection status forbiding Lawyers to use or view the contents of the session? OR, and being one to seldom resort to violence, We just line up the lawyers and shoot them. Its the same reason I moved from california, the state used to be a great place to live, where citizens rights were protected by all the liberal activists passing laws to protect themselves. Problems is theres a point when you pass to many laws to protect people it becomes oppresive. The Internet used to run fine. Personally i still rue the day when my friend came to me and said "Have you tried this new program mosaic?", to which i course replied, "Saw it, sounds like a stupid program.", Well i did try it and predicted that it would bring the idiots... opps i mean the masses. and it did and this is what happens as a result, Eventually someone thaws out one of those monolithic fossils they call a lawyer and starts suing everyone they see. For the record, once and for all RTFM is a polite answer to a documented question yet people have been sued over using it. So once again, I urge the citizens of the world to unite in an effort to shoot all the lawyers.
