If we're going to talk about how cell companies nickle and dime their customers, there are way bigger fish to fry than voicemail - SMS, MMS, ringtones, etc.
If their phone is off/out of range, you won't show up in the missed calls log because the phone never got the call.
I imagine a page is sent via SMS, which means it will eventually get through rather than just the vague "You have X new voicemails" notice. I don't exactly scramble to answer that myself.
I'm sure this is along the lines of their newest business model:
10 Create music service, sell music
20 Shut down service, citing something like "lost profit", "pirates", etc.
30 Music from service #1 breaks
40 GOTO 10
Trains aren't profitable either, but those aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
Sometimes the government subsidizes private business for the greater public good (although most of the time they subsidize business due to "campaign contributions").
Why would they use an iPhone for shit like that? Buy a Tracfone or similar device from a store/vending machine. No names ever need to change hands and you can always ditch it if need be.
Yes he did, but he's not some huge, evil megacorporation. He's one guy who has cooked up this software that everybody wants to use, isn't he?
His only mistake was not telling people in the first place - not the whole whitelist/redirect thing. If you want to use NoScript than obviously a condition of that use is that the NoScript site is automatically whitelisted and the page opens up every time you have an update. For all of the benefits it gives one that is an awfully generous tradeoff.
I think even Big Oil knows that crude oil is going to run out in the next 100 years.
If you're a steel company, and someone finds a way to create synthetic steel that's pretty much just as good from more plentiful, regenerating/growing materials, wouldn't you invest in it?

It's not just "stupid" people who work jobs like grocery baggers. Don't forget about teenagers (goodbye extra college money/car money!), the elderly, the disabled, etc.
I wonder if lab machines are just like, fresh Windows/OSX installs or if they have real-world-use programs that many people have, like AIM, iTunes, etc.
Watch an episode of COPS. The odds are 1 to 3 that you'll see a criminal who is "On Crack".
You ever see one of those guys really doped up? They run around naked and play tag with police officers. Sometimes they try to jump fences or run through other people's houses.
Even if that's true, when you've come across as many bad Belkin devices as I have (through customers who wonder why their NIC doesn't work, etc.), you tend to lose faith in recommending the brand name.
* Quiet Cars
* Less pollution localized around vehicles (i.e. less of that highway diesel marinade)
* Lower maintenance cars - rotate the tires & change the wiper fluid
* Less points of failure compared to a combustion engine
* Lighter Weight = Less Impact/Damage on roads
Most Japanese developers feature their games in a clearly Japanese setting.
For those who don't know much about Japan: Mushroom Kingdom, Dinosaur Land, Hyrule, and Zebes are all provinces in Japan.
All voicemail does this AFAIK (Verizon calls it something like "Envelope Information"), but not all of them have it on by default.
And besides, it's way easier to read it than hear:
"Message from... eight... six... seven... five... three... oh... nine... on... july... tenth... at... two... thirty... one... pm..."

I think that's the equivalent of Shell Shock for Engineers.
I was always a bit puzzled by "Coheed & Cambria Latest CD no-cd"...
RTFA. It's from one of the newer Slashdot editors, T0k1WAR2th.
In America, yes. How about taking a look at Europe or Japan where the train systems are a major part of many people's commute?
The only reason they're not as successful is because the feddy is too god damned cheap to invest what they should invest in trains.
Trains aren't profitable either, but those aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I don't think the "You got Bing in my Yahoo!" commercial would fly so well. I'm sure someone would misinterpret it.

They should just ask the people who write The Simple English Wikipedia to do something with error messages.

Ahh durr, I put the article link instead of the xkcd link somehow. >_<
I don't know why either. It shows up fine in the site itself, but that's how it reads in the RSS.
Who is Ivan Krstić? Is he related to Little Bobby Tables?

Actually, yes. Yes it does.
Now, go defy expectations and RTFA instead.

RTFA? What are you some kinda young'un who don't know who things work around here? Get offa my lawn!

So in short, "on crack" means "FUN!"

But with EVs there's still the benefits of:
* Quiet Cars
* Less pollution localized around vehicles (i.e. less of that highway diesel marinade)
* Lower maintenance cars - rotate the tires & change the wiper fluid
* Less points of failure compared to a combustion engine
* Lighter Weight = Less Impact/Damage on roads
