Having said all that, I don't believe that people should have a free reign of music, games and other works of art...Companies will just stop producing...
Companies don't create music, games, art. People do. Companies skim off buckets of money and bribe corrupt politicians to change the law to perpetuate the status quo. There was a time record companies etc. were a necessary element in getting what artists created to the end customer. We don't need them now.
That won't work now. Anti-money laundering legislation mandates either a driver's licence or a passport. No ID, no account. Oh, and try buying or selling a house without ID too.
Software developers rarely manage their own machines. And that's not necessarily a bad thing... I got my degree in Computer Science. Great people to solve a hairy logic problem, not someone you'd want with admin access on any machine you have to support...
Really? I've been responsible for my own box at the last four companies I've worked for (17 years). I'm not sure how I'd be able to do my job if my primary tool wasn't under my control.
Doesn't Songbird work with the Nano? It doesn't solve the main poster's problem, but it solves yours, doesn't it?
Dunno, I don't use Songbird. I have found that the latest libgpod does support 3rd Gen nanos so I can get it working, no thanks to Apple.

Just another reason not to buy the ipod/phone. Double if you are not using a mac.
And don't forget to tell them, I've left the following feedback on www.apple.com:
I was given a nano when I left my last work place. I used it for a while but it is now gathering dust. Why? because you expect me to use iTunes to transfer songs to it. You've designed it so that I can't use my media manager of choice (amarok) on my OS of choice (Linux). I fail to see why people get so excited about your products, you just want to lock customers into your over-priced hardware and badly-executed software.
Similarly, the reason your linux drivers work so well is that linux hasn't had the ginormous revamp that the win32 kernel just underwent.
The Linux driver APIs are in a constant state of flux, in fact people that insist on shipping drivers without source are always whining for a fixed binary API.
Linux drivers are generally more reliable because they're written and maintained by people who can program rather than thrown together my a h/w engineer as an afterthought.

Back in my C64 days, I used to practically think in 65xx assembly code... ah, memories.
The sad thing is I was able to disassemble the first few lines from memory. How come I knew 4C was JMP when I can get to the top of the stairs and forget what I went up for?!?
if you want to make money, you work on Windows. Do you, then what have I been doing the last 15 years? Eating fresh air?
Work with a steaming pile of excrement if you wish, don't imply that there's no choice out there.
First experience of computer gaming? That would have been Space Invaders on the school Commodore PET in about 1981. It was written by the Biology teacher, he charged us to play it during break times. I think the money went on his pipe tobacco...
I was first exposed to role-playing games about the same time. A different Biology teacher started a D&D game up. I soon took up DMing and bought some of the first AD&D books in the UK.

No, they're too busy raiding birthday parties. You need body armour for that. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/17/police_raid_birthday_barbecue_facebook_invitation/
Is FAT used for anything other than USB drives?
Dozens of devices use it. Cameras, GPS, if it has files most likely it uses FAT.

If your exchange isn't unbundled you can't. You can check here:

And where do I get this "rock-solid proprietary software"? I've been in the business 20 years, not seen any yet.
One sysadmin (you still out there igb?) named all our Sun workstations after Bob Dylan songs, some were rather long.
People will leave XP for whatever the next MS milestone is.
You mis-spelled millstone.

I believe certain parties have concluded it is too hard to actually shrink government so that best strategy is to make it incompetent.
Ours seems to be able to exhibit gross incompetence without any external input. YMMV.
we're all terrorists until proven otherwise.
System calls my foot. They change the APIs to fundamental subsystems at will, look at the differences in locking for example.

Wrong, google for TPON.
In fact it almost certainly wasn't fibre.
There were a few 'lucky' places where TPON was rolled out, Milton Keynes was one. It was fibre to the kerb and then copper to the home.
I believe they overlaid copper when ADSL took off but they may just have ripped the fibre out.
It was invented by David Bradley whilst working at IBM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bradley_(engineer)

He doesn't want it for coding in...
Does it matter? Let's put them all in a vacuum, worthless bunch of crooks the lot of 'em.
