Oh give me a break, yes controlling every thing does allow you the possibility of optimizing to perfection but in 99.99-% of the cases it is better to leave the optimization to the experts who wrote the optimization part of the compiler. And Java does have a few aspects in it that make optimization easier. So sure it is not faster or as fast a C++ but it could be (at least minus the slight lag that not compiling directly to an EXE introduces)
No it is common knowledge that this is wrong, obvious Assembly is faster then C++, if given extensive tuning by sophisticated programmers.
And is the article not actually saying that no it is not faster in most cased, because most people will not or cannot spend hundreds of hour tuning their code (not even to mention that it require a C++ expert to even attempt this).
"Taking care of people so that they can be as high-functioning, pain-free, and financially secure is perhaps a more practical solution."
But it is not a solution to the same problem. Keeping people comfortable and happy is a worthy goal and I do not think that anyone would be against it but it is not a solution to the government controlling your life and taking away your basic human rights.
The problem comes when you have clinically depressed and otherwise not completely in control of there senses people.
I agree 100% that everyone has a right to decide how/when they die. But the government probably should intervene when someone is not considered fit to make their own decisions, like for a child for example of a depressed person (I believe that there are many exampled of people getting over depression and being very relieved hat they were prevented from killing themselves).
Well I did not mean the current graphics, I have seen little of the actual finished game. But before this new team got on board the game had some great looking gameplay/cinematic footage.
But if you are not a good self directed learner how could you be classified as a intellectual anyways? if you completely stop learning after college then I cannot see you really being qualified for any career or to be considered that smart of a person.
Even colleges do not go so far as to say what they have to teach is the only thing you will ever have to know or learn.
Well self-taught is a good way to go for many people. And universities and other educational places are more and more opening up learning for free from the internet (for example you can view many MIT lectures online for free I believe).
And if you want to learn anything useful in the real world, like CS, then you can find tons of learning material online and people willing to help you with it.
At no point did I say that you cannot or will not learn in any of these places. You almost certainty will if you are at all interested in learning and maybe even if you are not. I simply think, and I think that my statements thus far have indicated this, that they are far from perfect institutions and in many cases may not be the optimal place to learn skills that interest and help some particular individuals.
First off, where do you come off with saying that not going to college means that you cannot learn another thing in your life. A monopoly on education was not given to colleges and universities.
And secondly what college did you go to? Other then the Arts (which I only know off second hand {for example a friend of mine passed a arts math course that he did not know he was in [and therefor did not attend a single lecture or attempt any assignment] until the day before the final exam}) the assignments alone in Math/CS can take 80 hours a week. just writing down the answers alone have taken me an hour plus to some very boring but big questions. And in CS if you have to write some moderately challenging program in a language you only learned last week then it will take you some time. And don't even try contradicting the teachers, I have never met one who would agree that they were wrong no matter how oblivious it is that they were (because there is always some convoluted logic that makes there explanation semi correct).
In summery The Arts are not Science, so don't try to compare your education to mine if that it the background you come from.
And also it is hard to judge who is a geek when all the geeky things of the past have been taken over by the mainstream market. And "college is a waste of time" != "don't learn new things and test/improve your intelligence"
"A little easier", lol, lol, I am actually still physically laughing out loud right now. Myst is one of the more challenging games in the whole of adventure-dome while Syberia is in the easy category easily.
First off Myst is not in my opinion at all suited for a 10 year old girl. And secondly I always recommend REALmyst as a 3D alternative that really opens up the world.
Diablo is not an adventure game, not even close. Adventure games are puzzle/story based games that come in a few flavours such as the old school text based adventures like Zork and the graphical adventures that include Myst, Monkey Island, and Syberia among a plethora of others.
I would offer suggestions but they have already been covered. But if you were more specific in what you want I am sure I or someone else could offer a suggestion. Particularly, why is Diablo not acceptable but some other game like it would be (they all involve killing people, and yes sure it contains demons but they are just cannon fodder and I really do not think anyone would ever consider them scary). But since she has not played many games yet maybe sticking to a single genre does not make sense because she might enjoy another one just as much.
And/. is hardly the place to ask for gaming advice, there are tons of sites dedicated to just that thing (with lists and forums for the persona touch) that will offer you better results.
"Many have taken the value of popular programs like DARE — in which police warn kids about the dangers of drug use — as an article of faith,' writes Brown. 'But Dennis Rosenbaum of the University of Illinois at Chicago and other researchers have shown that the program has been ineffective and may even increase drug use in some cases"
Anyone who has actually sat through one of these would not be surprised that they increase drug use.
Has he even been keeping up with new advances in tech or the business world? It seems to me that running Microsoft would require a a person who has put in a lot of effort to get and maintain a lot of key skills and with Bill Gates basically retired I would be surprised if he did this.
And I am not even sure that he ever had the skills to run the company that Microsoft has become, and I believe that after Gates left and Steve Ballmer took over the profits rose quite a lot so it is not like Gates was doing so good himself.
And that is the crux of that matter, and also anyone wanting to advertise there view above others calls themselves scientists now anyways. So just because they called themselves scientists does not mean that they were actually running scientifically valid experiments.
Who knows a little about quantum computers and is quite interested in them. He says that from all he can find out about D-Wave on the internet they seem like a scam (ie they do not actually have any computers, nor is their any evidence they are linked to any of the experts in the field). Will be interested to see what he thinks of this article.
"key to quicker business innovation is skipping college"
I would agree with that. From what I has seen by the time people are done with college they are far to tired and drained to have much enthusiasm and innovative juices to actually accomplish something neat. And that is not even mentioning that they will likely be swimming in debt.
College is for getting jobs, if you want to innovate and/or own your own business then I cannot see it helping.
antibiotics are often given a preventative and in many cases for livestock are continually given from birth to death as a preventative.

Well would it not be wise to pay a little more and not have the possibility of your entire country destroyed?
Actually the footage and screens I have seen (especially the old stuff), looks decent to quite good.

With all the patches I thought it finally was.

Way to ruin a perfectly good conspiracy theory with the facts.
If only I had mod points, that deserves an insightful.

These people could have a point.
