  1. Should people use more than one Search Engine on What's It Like to be Google's Boss Techie? · · Score: 2

I have google as my home page. I have the IE toolbar on my windows machine and the Galeon eqiv on my Linux box. In short - Google is normaly my first port of call.

Despite this I've always made a consious effort to keep a backup search engine that I try if I ever find myself using more than a "few" of the results from Google. I find that if there are, say, 10 good pages from google there will be at least 3 that AllTheWeb (for example) will find that Google didn't have in the top 50.

I've decided that its very dangerous to use one SE to the exclusion of all else because there will always be holes, index bias, algorithm oddities etc that hide some of the info you wanted. As long as your other SE isn't simply playing follow-the-leader you'll benefit from the little effort of using a second source.

The idea is old of course, any researcher will tell you that having one source is poor methodology.

Does Google recognise this idea and is there anything you plan to do about it?

A Super-advanced search that allowed you to alter the weightings of link importance, document age, the domain it sits on etc etc? That'd surely be too much work for the average Joe.

I don't have an answer or I'd be sat coding it up but I do find searches that simply work better elsewhere. Maybe if you had 3 algs with a 70%, 20%, 10% mix in the results we'd all be a little richer.

I got the idea from a similar project I saw over at this place but because the FV24 is so tiny I managed to get everything, including a 1U psu, in the standard LX box.

Everything about this player looks to be 100% standard for a cheap OEM far east unit. I've seen lots in the UK. The ONLY new idea (or new to me) is the Sega Master System built in. I reckon you could intergrate a SMS onto a chip and make it for next to no cost.. but what about those 700+ games. I looked and couldn't find any details of the licencing arrangements. I couldn't find a press release from SEGA either, and they tend to announce everything.

Maybe I'm too cynical (can on be?) but I wouldn't buy one. Those games come from lots of different publishers and I bet some of them aren't even still trading, let alone doing deals with old IP.

When they claim you can play the games in digital surround sound I raise an eyebrow. When they give special thanks to Omar Cornut (Zoop) of http://www.smspower.org/ (A ROMs site) I raise the other :)

  9. Are the IDSA in the wrong here? on IDSA Goes After Abandonware · · Score: 5

Isn't it OK to copy games that are no longer distributed in the stores or commercially exploited?

No, the current availability of a game in stores is irrelevant to its copyright status. Unlike trademarks, copyrights are not considered abandoned if they are no longer enforced. Copyrights do not enter the public domain just because they are no longer commercially exploited or widely available. Therefore, the copyrights of games are valid even if the games are not found on store shelves, and copying or distributing those games is a copyright infringement.
    (From http://www.idsa.com/piracy.html)
What exactly are the IDSA doing wrong here? People should write to the member companies and ask them to change their corporate policies, not flame the ISDA. The companies signed up because they didn't want their IP put on the web for download.. you're allowed to complain to them but you can't just ignore them because you don't like what they have to say. The ISDA are doing what they're paid to do. They hit high profile sites because it is easy, low risk (they clearly have legal right whatever the moral viewpoint) and sends a message. If they let these high profile sites go it whould imply acceptace of copyright devalument after, say, 6 years or so. The members don't want that.

I know people here get very worked up about GPL violations, well these guys appear to be engaged in wholesale licence violation. Its not as if these companies aren't trading anymore or that these games have no value. Companies like Namco still make good money from 20yr old games being sold today. Maybe EA want to put Gunship in thier next flight sim as a secret sub-game in the air traffic control system computer (Day of the tenticle anyone?). These guys were giving Gunship away, which devalues such a promotion.

Am I missing something or is this whole "Abandonware" tag being abused. Who says these games are Abandoned? Doesn't that happen when the Publisher/whoever formally Abandons it, or changes the licence or the copyright expires? Maybe if they go bankrupt (although such rights usually find a buyer even then). There are examples of companies releasing old IP because they don't need it, think its good PR, had a fit of humanity etc.. but this site doesn't look like a repository of that to me.

I don't see the IDSA overstepping any marks here. This one of the roles they exist to carry out. Complaining to the members makes sense. If you alert them to a market for old games them may make them a $1 dload...

I assure you that Google.com follows it to the letter. All the main SEs do.. if they didn't they might even be leaving themselves open to legal challenges. Read the old mailing lists at Webcrawler (search for "robots.txt" on google) and you'll see that people used to get quite wound up by rude SEs back in 94. A Web server's CPU time was worth something then.

As for all the lone gunmen out there cooking up theories...read this. Google has ALREADY sold the top links for some keywords. They don't hide it, read the FAQ on their site and you'll find the address to write to to buy listings. Maybe you should read the Demographics. Your the market being sold. Seems fair to me.

The actual search results (not the adverts) are genuine and not sold. Makes sense... consider the whole Google model (who links to you affects your ranking) and its clear Yahoo, Disney etc will all rank very highly. Lots of links into them because they are quality sites.
