FWIW, a 500MHz EV6 runs a Lucas-Lehmer test for Mersenne Primes about 75% faster than a 700MHz P3, and that's comparing fortran code on the EV6 against hand-tuned x86 assembly.
This, of course, says nothing about the Itanium, but by the time that ships, we'll all be crusing along with copper EV7's. --
I've used this compliler extensively, and the output is as fast as the TRU64 compiler. The EV4 doesn't have super-advanced pipelining, etc like the later chips, but the compiler still turns out some great binaries.
Thats a cluster, not a single machine. And plus, VA is not the sole vendor there (IBM is in on it also). Irrelevant anyway, as Wildfire clusters under Tru64 UNIX (formerly DEC UNIX/OSF1) can be larger than that (at least 1024 CPUS, more in later releases). Plus you get true single-machine administration and NUMA. Oh yeah, and its 64-bit from the ground up. Oh yeah, and you can hot-swap CPUs and RAM. Oh and one other thing, you can actually buy applications that will utilize all of its power (Oracle and Informix, as well as others).
Sorry, its not the same. One day Linux will be able to do this (I hope), but not now. Besides, we were talking about VA, not Linux as a whole.
Bzzt, sorry... VA doesn't make "big expensive monster computers". When they make something like a Sun E10k or the new Compaq Wildfire, then we'll talk...

It also means people who own the stock can sell off smaller chunks. IE, If you have 100 shares and the stock splits 2-1, you now have 200 shares; you can then sell 100 of them to protect some of your profits and still keep the other 100. 100 being the smallest number of shares you can normally trade.

True dat, but there has been a pretty noticable decline in quality since the andover buyout; not only in content, but also in service - the pages seem to load slower than ever nowadays! you think with all that phat cash they could fix that problem...
ok smart guy, decode 21066 for us then...
yes that was an actual shipping processor.

True dat, but its still *much* better than GNU.

Huh? This is a port of the UNIX/VMS compiler. No "Intel" version exists.

Dumba$$ moderator... the Multia is a stripped down AlphaStation 200, so this is a *VERY* on-topic post.
To answer your question, yes - both Linux and the new compiler will work on a multia.
