So far as i know the intent is to find the shortest *known* ruler, not the absolue shortest.
We don't need to "find" the "shortest *known* ruler" because its already known (DUH). The project is to find the optimal ruler (i.e. the absolute shortest) for any given number of marks. Why else would you search the entire space of possibilities?
Actually, it was. Companies don't distribute money to shareholders except through dividends (or stock buy-backs, but then the shareholders don't have shares anymore). What he probably should have said was something along the lines of "Corporations only motivation is to increase the value of stockholders' shares." Nowhere did I say anything about a dividend being a measure of a company's value. --
In corporate America, it's practically illegal to do anything with money except distribute it to stockholders as quickly as possible. Very few companies still offer dividends - shareholders would generally rather have the money spent on improving the business, driving the share price up. But you'd rather badmouth corportations, despite your statement to the contrary in your opening paragraph. --
"It seems that Corporate America (and Corporate The World) has not yet come to the realization that the Internet is no longer limited to techies. . . The new Web site depends solely on images for navigation, and there is not a single alt= tag on the site. Therefore, blind users cannot use the site.
Several fallicies here. First, there is the implicit assumption that there are no blind techies - which seems potentially very offensive. Second, that techies use a graphics-enabled browser. Also there is an assumption that techies would be interested in the corporate propaganda that this pharmacutical conglomerate wants to spew. It seems what they really don't realize is that Internet is not limited to ignorant mass-market consumers with full eyesight. --
There is no mention of either Transmeta or Crusoe in the story, other than in the "related links" section. I don't think any of this was prompted by Transmeta's actions - Intel has this stuff planned out months in advance. Slashdot is just using any chance it gets to hype Transmeta b/c Linus works there. --
is there even a story? just a NASA press release that has nothing to do with d.net...
next some AC writes "wouldnt a beowulf cluster of these be AWESOME" and roblimo thinks "fuck yeah" and decides to post "could this beowulf cluster be AWESOME?".
then he'll start posting to tell us he just went to the bathroom. --
your connection sucks because you are not on Internet 2. Just because your university is, doesnt mean you are. The whole point is to keep off recreational use - if you have to ask "what happened to Internet 2?" then the chances are you won't ever get on. --
Basically it's compiling the new kernel copying it over the old one and that's it.
Uhm, bad idea. You should always keep the old kernel. What if your new kernel doesn't work? Since you copied over the old one (which is known to work), you're screwed. --
"Super moderators" -- bad idea. And no posts should be yanked. IIRC, some judge ruled that if a site deletes any user comments, it becomes responsible for all of them. A better solution would be to give all registered users moderation, i.e. each user could moderate each post up or down one point, then assign an average to the post. This would quickly eliminate bad moderation while still keeping the trolls down.
On this same topic, a feature I would like to see added is the ability to sort posts with lowest scores first. I find the trolls to generally be extremely entertaining, and this way I could easily read them. Without the trolls, I'd have little motivation to read the comments at all:) --
You guys have been saying the OGR is right around the corner for a long time now. It is really starting to piss me off, because your announcement the you were going to do OGR basicly killed the existing OGR project, which probably would have been finished with 22-mark rulers by now. I just pray that you guys dont try to mess with GIMPS - the bulk of your stat-happy users will hate 6 month long work units and will probably abandon 90% of them, leaving us to sort through the mess. --
It's called "irony". It's funny if you can figure it out. It's not that hard...

It's nothing like a one time pad at all. This is authentication, not encryption.

:)
The first paragraph says he is 78. But at least you know he's not a baby boomer

OGRs have practical applications in designing more efficent antennas and also in X-Ray crystalography, among other things.
See http://members.aol.com/golomb20/intro.htm for more information.

sorry Hemos, OGR has stubs, not keys. And you don't crack them.

geez rob, you make it sound like you're still living in a box and eating tuna fish everyday, struggling to pay the electric bill.
go buy your own boat.

it's called sarcasm, dumbass.

only thing preventing a cellphone watch is the battery technology.

put a few drops in your eyes
think about that...
it might be cool if your dosed, but you won't be able to see anything other than a (probably painfully intense) glow.
--
only problem with the eye drops...
it might be a tad bit hard to see if your eyes are covered by glowing stuff

It shouldn't be hard for Compaq to do this, as they have excellent Chinese support in Tru64/OSF1.

uh... its a little too late, no? And anyone could have gotten in at the IPO price with the OpenIPO system.

try "aint" instead of "isn't"

Do you ever run into Steve Jobs or Bill Gates at like the grocery store? That must be surreal.
--
yep, and their "announcement" killed the existing OGR project. Kind of like Microsoft pre-emptively announcing products to kill their competition.
mersenne.org has lots of links to more scientifically interesting distributed projects.
