  1. well, i'm a pretty hardcore weed smoker..... on Drugs, Computers & Cyberculture · · Score: 1

Well, maybe it's because i'm from Vancouver, aka vansterdam, but i smoke a LOT of weed ( i have my own growroom in the basement ) and a lot of the ppl in the geek world i know smoke pot at least... i know some coders who shroom fairly often too.

i'd be willing to bet that it's just a counter-culture thing in general. if you read the article in full (it's pretty long) it seems like the writer is unable to make up her mind on some issues, most notably the decrim issue.

i think she's right on as far the narco-military-industrial complex thing goes though.

i'm betting that age difference and geography will be the big divider between ppl on /.

i'm just reading Hackers: Heroes of the computer revolution (by steven levy) which is a great book, btw; and he seems to say that drugs wasn't a big part of the original scene at MIT in the 50s & 60s, although it was more so on the west coast.

    any thoughts?

  2. Re:I'm a bit confused... on Lego Machine Gun · · Score: 1

heh, well, i would argue that the reason this kid turned the barbie to a machine gun is not genetics but the other cultural stimuli, such as movies and television which literally steam-rolled any gender-typing that may have been going on with hawaii-fun-barbie.

    :P

  3. Re:You can thank MS for that on Free Be · · Score: 1

People, what the hell is going on here? Netscape was giving away their browser before MS even knew what the internet was!!! How many of you remember d/ling the latest ver from the site in 1995? Sure, it was only for home and educational use, but don't kid yourself....

Netscape Navigator was free-as-in-beer since day 1.

The reason MS made IE free was to COMPETE with a company that was doing the same thing. All in all, as we all sit here and yaw about what the future of OSS and MS and all the rest of it will bring, the only thing we can be certain of is that not one of us really knows how it's going to be....

  4. Re:Best Bet - Make YOur own choice. on Geeks, Geek Issues and Voting · · Score: 1

Coming from a country where we do have a parliamentary system, I can tell you that it is many times better than the Congressional Republic that is the US. In the case of the first-past-the-post parliamentary system, the ppl running for office must pay closer attention to the will of communities on a smaller and more personal scale than that of the Congressional system.

As I am a philosophy undergrad in Political Phil, I can tell you that the absolute worst thing you can do is not to vote at all. It is at least better to go to the polling station and nullify your ballot or use some other form of protest.

Also, I don't know by what logic someone ever suggested to vote for the candidate that you think will win. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, and it would mean by definition that a government elected in such a manner would technically NOT be a democracy (remember, a democracy is not defined by the structure of a government; it is truly defined by how close the ruling party / person accurately reflects the will of the state... btw, under the current Clinton Administration, that would make the US an oligarchy, not a democracy.)

SO, vote for the candidate you think is the best all-round. Even if they aren't in any specific party, you should vote for them. A lot of ppl assume that their vote doesn't make a difference, but every vote counts as equally as another.
