  1. Re:PowerQuest V2i Desktop Works and Ghost will die on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 1

Ah - found it - the original post mentioned that Windows has no technology to facilitate backing up live volumes. As of XP it has Volume Shadow Copy - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default. asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prdg_ dsm_vtrj.asp?frame=true

    Fyi

  2. PowerQuest V2i Desktop Works and Ghost will die on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 1

I use PowerQuest's V2i Desktop to do a disk to disk backup and it gets everything and the disk is bootable - all from within windows. It also supports incremental updates to image backups. Occasionally it can't allocate a cluster - but not if I clean boot first.

I was speaker at a Chicago User's group in March and one of the PowerQuest technical folks was speaking as well. They have been working closely with Microsoft for 2 years on bare metal provisioning and making their product work under WinPE (replacement boot environment for DOS boot disks for doing system builds). For the longest time Ghost didn't have anything that ran 32-bit text mode to run under PE. In addition, Ghost still requires a boot to DOS to do it's actual imaging even though options are chosen during graphical mode.

IMO, If it isn't Ghost that is dumped or absorbed into V2i, then I would expect they stay seperate products.

  3. Get VMWare and skip the server room... on Home Server Rooms? · · Score: 1

Not sure what the need for multiple boxes is, but I collapsed my home lab down to a single box. Less wires, electricity, heat, etc. If you need lots of servers, get VMWare GSX server. Even with the cost of VMWare and a good dual (or more) processor box - you should still come out much cheaper and cooler than buying a rack and special rack mounted equipment and network hubs, etc.

  4. The Barricade Rules on New Netcomm Smart i Share 56k Modem/Hub/Server · · Score: 1

In addition to all the comments made about it here - there is a wireless access point version of the Barricade that has 3 switched ports. Now all it needs is a second COM port so I could do multi-link until broadband comes to my neighborhood.

  5. Windows Will Never Die, Even if MS Does on ESR: Microsoft Could Collapse In 6 Months (updated) · · Score: 1

As big as Microsoft is, they could still fall. If they did - their technology would not fade away. Does anyone really believe that IBM Mainframes would have dried up in two years if IBM had gone under? A technology with the install base of Windows draws it's long term viability from it's ubiquity - not from the company that created it. Linux has a huge install base with no company directing it - why would Windows need one?

  6. How about Two Intel 10/100+ Mngmnt Pro's for $39? on TurboLinux & Linksys Announce Bundling Deal · · Score: 1

Intel runs a corporate preview program that lets you get two of these adapters for $39. They go for $60 each on buy.com. Does all the PXE and wake on lan stuff. The program says you can only order once, but they don't check - ordered three times so far. Check out DesktopEngineer.com Item

  7. SIS for Remote Installation Services on Microsoft Invents Symbolic Links · · Score: 1

One of the most practical applications of SIS is to support Remote Installation Services. RIS stores copies of Windows 2000 Installation media files that are uploaded from the original CDs. This makes it take much less space for storing several OS versions and the relevant service packs (the need for such technology is complicated by Microsoft's new maintenance and release strategy which is quite ugly). The fact that RIS REQUIRES SIS may make it difficult to replicate the RIS store in a large enterprise, because I'm not sure that it is easily duplicated or backed up.

  8. You Can Only Sell Ads If You Have Accurate Stats on Deal Reached in iCraveTV Case · · Score: 1

More eyes, larger audiences, more revenue right? Not if you can't accurately track it. Audience demographics are the bread and butter of selling advertising and setting rates. If you lose the accuracy of your demographic, you loose the appeal and high rates of your ad time. Rebroadcasting on the net not only makes demographics tracking impossible, it also diffuses geographic and "time slot" demographics that the industry has been built around. Crossover into other demographics would also create problems for the guarentees given to advertisers.

It is about control and it is sad.

Anybody up for creating a hit counter for broadcast television?

  9. LinkSys all the way on Cheap Rackmount Enclosures/Systems? · · Score: 1

Linksys 4 station switches are great. They do both at and ps/2 type connectors on the same switch (necessary for older equipment), can be cascaded for multiple machines, are electronic and only cost $104 at buy.com (http://www.buy.com/comp/product.as p?SKU=10022032 You can also use the cheaper Belkins cables to connect everything (http://www.buy.com/comp/product.as p?SKU=10029779 The downside to the fancier Linksys 8 station device is that you have to buy their more expensive special cables. When using this switch I have found that you have to be viewing a booting machine through hardware mouse detection (if the system does it) and sometimes (NT/2000) through mouse driver loading in the operating system. After that everthing works flawlessly for my two AT/Serial attached devices, one PS/2 attached device and laptop with PS/2 splitter for kb and mouse. Do not get this device confused with LinkSys' newer compact PS/2 only switches for $70 on buy.com.
