Although I can agree with the "only in the way Apple designed it to do" in your comment I think you'd be hard pressed to find a phone where the firmware upgrades are so frequent as on the iPhone.
I have an original EDGE iPhone and despite the fact that it's well over a year old I can still look forward to installing the 3.0 software on it.
You can fault Apple for a lot of things, but with the iPhone i think they've quite clearly shown a commitment to developing their OS without making users rebuy a device every six months.
