Almost correct. Take a call from any telemarketroid. Record date/time, company name, caller name, and politely make it perfectly clear you do not be wish be called again. Same company's 'troids call again, record the same info, file (less that $100 in most states) in small claims court for $750. And you get the court costs back, too. This has been known to cut the 'troids out of life's little pains.

I bought an Athlon 800mhz overclocked to 1Ghz from an outfit called Kryotech. They sell a processor/motherboard/case combination that sits on a 40lb fridge connected directly to the processor. Runs at minus 40C. We've had it running NT/MetaFrame since 8 Jun. The thing screams and only needs rebooted when NT hoses (2x/day). Not a thing wrong with the hardware.

This is good for us guys hiding deep behind a good corporate firewall. My boxes don't get hacked, virus'd, 'cause corporate security has their act together. But I'll still implement all of these I haven't yet, and dig deeper. I've got a good gig going, but nothing lasts forever.

At some point we learn, dig, and hack our way into that next great job, and need to keep this stuff at the forefront.

Keeps everything cool and froody, and free's up time for useful things, slashdot, Quake, sleep.

  4. Re:Real Independent Music Story on More Napster Updates · · Score: 1

Finally, a post from someone who's been thru the real world of independent music production!!! You guys got a great break on studio time, and fortunately missed the touring expense. 5 guys for 3 weeks playing up to 400 miles from home cost us over $10k back in 1980. I think I still owe someone some $$$ over that.

So, how many of these Napster users have ever played a note? How many have sweated over the right lyrics? A good guitar riff? Why shouldn't the folks that create that one song that sums you up, that hits you in the heart, get paid for their effort? IS their work any less valuable than the guy that fixes your car, built your house, made your clothes? Do they (Napster users) steal all this stuff?

I've followed this story since it broke, and have yet to see WHY Metallica got started on Napster. They found the tune they cut for MI:2 (six different versions of it before it was released) on Napster.

Napster could be a great thing. We could cut the big studios (cost some $$$, though) out of the loop. But we need to insure the artists (I could care less about Sony, Warner, etc) get at least a eating wage. Not just the Metallica's of the world, but that cool band at the corner bar you saw last night.

Please folks, think about this. I've been playing/listening to some great and not so great music for 30+ years, and if you really expect to hear it continue, you're going to have to pay some one (hopefully the artist) for it to be made. Just think, the next big (insert your favorite type of music here) band is waiting for a break.

    Give 'em a chance.

    Everyone deserves a break.

  5. Do I Dare Ask? on New DVD Lawsuits Filed by the MPAA (UPDATED) · · Score: 1

Can we do it? Can we stay out of movie theaters until these folks get hit enough in the bank account to make a difference? Can we hit hard enough through TV advertisers who support our favorite shows? Or is it just the DVD hardware manufacturers who we take action against? I spend over $2k per year taking me and my family of 4 to movies. I don't watch much TV, but my family does. I can do this, ignore the latest installment of Hollywood. I won't like it, but I like what they're doing much less. BTW, I've given DeCSS out to 100+ folks. Had a bunch of old floppies I paid for and didn't want to throw away. Tell Martha to get the kids in, looks like a nasty storm's a comin'

You can't discount progress due to end-user input. Fighting FUD with facts and accepting constructive critizism can only improve Linux and all Open Source software. Adding additional functionality to Linux only gets to be a problem when we forget what we're supposed to be doing: having fun hacking the thing together!!!!!
