You don't need commit yourself to a life of indentured servitude in order to be educated. Be honest... most people in college are not honing their critical thinking skills. They are going through the motions with no real interest in the subjects they are 'studying' and retaining very little of what they are exposed to. They do this to get a degree in order to get a job because "that's what people do". Most people would be much better served by some sort of internship program than a college degree.

Honestly... the way we are likely to be printing money in the next few years that might even come to be less. I'm not saying that isn't significant but it wouldn't really hurt us as much as people think if China dumped all debt. It would just end up snatched up by Europe and other countries that want dollars with us taking a few points hit. Also any imagined catastrophic impact on the US -which won't happen- would only end up hurting US buying power and in turn China.

At the same time you can't argue that mankind would be better off (outside of some kind of Eden) with no government at all. So the best solution would logically be as much government intrusion as necessary and no more. I don't think many people would seriously argue with this. It is the question of how much is necessary that is the major point of contention. Start reading here: http://oll.libertyfund.org/index.php?option=com_staticxt&staticfile=show.php&title=343

Yeah. I cannot believe the lack of knowledge about the new health insurance mandate in some of the above posts. It seems like we went for weeks with nothing else being discussed in the news and among my friends. As the law was written, you will buy insurance or you will be fined. It is a mandate. The supreme court justices noted with some amusement that the government called it a fine and then a tax and then a fine depending on which argument they happened to be trying to win at the time. This indeed is not yet implemented. Also, employers WILL provide health insurance or they will be fined. These fines increase year to year initially I think that the fine per employee is something like 6% of that employees salary and grows from there. I doubt it will stand but I guess looking at the results from 1942 Wickard vs Filburn anything is possible.

Look... if you're trapped in a burning building 12 stories up with a broken leg are you going to want to see a female firefighter come busting through the door or a male firefighter? If your business requires quick and maybe brutal decisions to be made you are probably going to get the results you need from a male manager before a female one. That's be beauty of state level government. No they can't. America is not a democracy. It just isn't. The will of the majority is subservient (or should be) to the laws of individual liberty (the constitution) of the republic. From Madison: "As there is a degree of depravity in mankind which requires a certain degree of circumspection and distrust: So there are other qualities in human nature, which justify a certain portion of esteem and confidence. Republican government (that of a Republic) presupposes the existence of these qualities in a higher degree than any other form. Were the pictures which have been drawn by the political jealousy of some among us, faithful likenesses of the human character, the inference would be that there is not sufficient virtue among men for self government; and that nothing less than the chains of despotism can restrain them from destroying and devouring one another."
