Btw, if you don't want to read his pieces, there is a setting in your user profile. I don't go into other pieces I don't find interesting and harp about how boring they are.

I think I read that the security personel in US airports work at minimum wage. Therefore they have an insanely high employee turn-over à la McDonald's (=no expertise).

In my mind, that's as stupid as paying a body-guard minimum wage.

In Europe they have pretty good salaries, and stay for years.

And it's not all genetics either, in Europe the women know how to dress and fix their hair+make-up at least. If you go out in sweat pants in Sweden people will look at you funny (I still can't bring myself to wear them when not excersising, even tho they are prevalent here).

Nah, I don't want step in cow dung when I go out. The mid-west has the suckiest climate I've ever heard of anyway, too hot in the summers and too cold in the winters. ;) I'd pick a place with great climate and sexy uninhibited women, like Spain, Southern France or Italy. Hey, we can probably buy the whole coastline of former Jugoslavia cheaply, they need the money. But they probably have cows there too tho. ;)

Things like this will just keep popping up if we don't make an example of eToys. We need to raise such a big stink that the media picks up on it and eToys gets bad publicity. If they start loosing customers left and right they will listen, believe me. The unofficial rules of the net are made by us users as a whole.

It is not enough that they drop the lawsuit. They have gotten what they wanted, to have etoy.com down for the xmas season. Next year they'll find some other excuse.

I think that to qualify as a geek you need to have something inside your head. That doesn't lend itself well to extremism, unless you had the misfortune of a particularly rotten set of parents, and even then many people seem to turn out pretty sane (it would be interesting to see a statistic on that).

  12. Re:Bias alert, please parse accordingly on Geeks, Geek Issues and Voting · · Score: 1

The problem with "work within the parties" are the unholy alliances it forces. For example, do you think the social conservatives and libertarians can coexist peacefully for any length of time? Both movements are trying to control the Republican party, and they by their nature arguably disagree on as many issues as they agree. I believe that public discourse would be much richer if there was a plethora of parties representing different views who could get their voice heard.

Well, the 1st amendment gives everyone the right to bitch. However, you could argue that it is ridiculous to first refuse to participate in the process under which decisions are made, and then complain about them later. If you don't like the major party candidates, vote for someone else! There are lots of candidates for president out there if you bother to look. Heck, there's even one for people who are into transcendental meditation.

All scientists I know personally are Christians. Based on my own anecdotal evidence, I would think the proportion of spiritual people in science is pretty much the same as in the general public.

"Believers" within science think that the laws of nature are created by a "higher being." Since it is something that you can neither prove nor disprove, it is not within the domain of science.

I think the "scientists abhor spirituality" argument is something propagated by religious fundamentalists. They need to rationalize why their teachings don't mesh with contemporary science.

For the record, I am an agnostic.

All IPOs I've heard of have floated less than 50% of the total stock. FIY, some of the astronomical early rises have been due to a very low supply of specific stocks and a very big buzz/hype. I agree that it'd be great if someone bought the company from the owners after it has bombed and turn it into a more serious operation. It just can't be done in the stock market before some of the owners decide to sell a hefty chunk of stock. That in turn won't happen before the SEC allows them to, which is 6 months after the IPO.
