Maybe if your sig made grammatical sense we could take you a little more seriously. And one other thing; it's easy to be flippant about social security if you've never been in a position where you might need it.
Every substance has an instrinsic value. However, the intrinsic value of gold is much higher than paper (mashed carbon fibers) mainly because gold is more scarce (on the market, not in the environment). Scarcity in itself doesn't create significant value however, there has to be one or a series of applications in the current society, even if it is just to function as an adornment. Even if humans at some point got disgusted with gold ornaments it would still have applications within industry, for example on circuit boards.

The Old Republic and the Jedi are separate entities as far as I know, so Obi-wan's statement does not cover the OR. The Jedi Council does not seem to have any direct authority over the senate, nor does the opposite seem to be the case
As for the game stretching into Episode I... A game covering 4000 years?? Must be the sequel to Civilization or something?:P
Well, he could have avoided others patenting his discovery by publishing it in any publicly circulated publication. An inventor and entrepreneur I know publish all their discoveries in a small local newspaper from the south of Chile (cheap, and few if anyone there can read it). They have recognized that the patent process is too much trouble for a small company to go thro, and this way they are protected from anyone hijacking their inventions.
Well, you also have to factor in the fact that the "migrant workers" send a lot of money home. Those money wiring companies have that as their biggest market, or so I've heard.
That's not true with the "first world country" immigrants tho, their relatives back home usually are living well.
I'm a "fwc" immigrant myself. My wife is an american, so at least I don't have to worry about those quotas that Linus et al deals with.
This site has a quiz type thing where you input your views and it matches you with candidates. It also has a page for each candidate with a condensed political platform: http://www.selectsmart.com/PRESIDENT/
This site has information on and video of the candidates on specific issues. It also has some comparisons, etc.: http://www.freedomchannel.com/
Yea, and he's the only candidate that uses a Palm to my knowledge. At least he cares about hi-tech, not just pretending to support it like some others who suddenly got interested when it was time to milk the cash-cow that is Silicon Valley. Gore has been there talking to people for years. Give credit where it is due.
In the interest of full disclosure, I currently support senators Bradley and McCain for president.
I'm just waiting for ArchieBunker to go berserk on this thread.
I don't know, I didn't come away with the same impression as you did, ronfar, Lord Kane, Corinne, et al. I think he only used the geek communnity as an example because he is writing this piece for a geek community. The point he was making is that the anonymity has a big drawback in that it allows you to post things you would never say in a face-to-face conversation (this is also one of the greatest strengths of course, if done in moderation).
Then he goes on to point out the greatest offenders, which arguably are young men. This he explains by raging testesterone-levels, which may or may not be the main reason. He didn't say that women or older men can't be hostile, just that they don't dominate the discussions with hostile remarks. I see the same trends in data about who dominates the classrooms at school, boys generally answer more questions and dominate discussions.
And way to go Mr. Katz for persevering in the face of so much hostility. The fact that so many people post is a tribute to an interest in the questions raised.
People seem to have trouble separating what organizations like the Red Cross does, and what the governments of the west are doing. Most of the government foreign aid goes to other governments to help their development. It is intended mainly for infrastructure, schools, and hospitals. Some also goes to supporting countries that are in fiscal crisis, like Russia now, and some asian countries in 1998. That some of it ends up in the pockets of the leaders due to lack of supervision. Don't just spout stuff you hear people around you say, that's just perpetuating ignorance, check the facts.
Well, we are talking about catastrophic failures here. And he did say 10 out of 12 for Apollo, which I presume means those two you mention.
Many times these machines fly with technologies that have never been used outside of testing before. When they test new fighter jets they count on a few crashes.
I don't think it is fair to berate them for having less than a 100% success rate, especially when they are expected to build stuff for a tenth of what they used to get. Go ahead, critizise the mistakes, then see that more money is allocated next time so they can do their job.
Contrary to popular opinion, when you spend money it does not go into a black hole. It benefits other people.
In this case part of it will go to Energyia, and part to the investors in question. It will also do a great deal to promote commercial ventures in space, which arguably is a worthwile cause.
They wrote about it in Wired about 6 months ago. I'm too lazy to look it up right now tho, so you'll have to make the trek to the library and look thro the indexes.
I think they spoke with the guy who is working on it, and they couldn't say for sure if it was for real or not.
You seen to be asuming that authors always get to pick their titles and subtitles. AFAIK that is only the case when it come to big-shot authors that can play publishers against each other. I'm not sure Jon Katz is quite there yet.
Agreed, but "temps" generally don't get paid more than an employee in reality. The temp agency takes a big chunk of the money the company pays, so you likely end up with less than you would if you worked in the same position as an employee. "Contract workers" are their own agency, so they get to keep it all.
At least that's how I understand the terms to apply, from my wife's experience as a temp. She quit as soon as she realized the temp agency was making almost as much as she was. Most "temps" aren't tech workers per se tho, so they are dealing with a different job market.
Anyway, it is illegal to hire an temp and treat him or her like an employee. That's what the legal suit is about, in simplified terms. If you don't like that, write to your congressman.
Well, from time to time companies issue new stock to fill their coffers. That's partly why they care what their stock is valued at. The new issue isn't priced at the IPO price for obvious reasons, it is priced at bit below current market value. So in buying the stock you support the company in a way.
A computer lab is most often on private premises so you can make any rules you like. Maybe a state college has to be more careful. We didn't have any rules against watching porn in our computer labs, but no one ever did in a way that was obvious either. I certainly never heard of anyone jacking off in the labs, that is just preposterous!
AFAIK watching porn in public so that other people can see is covered by decency laws, just as indecent exposure is. It is one of those laws that are only enforced when someone reports it, I guess.

If you call prosperity decay, I'll grant you one point.
You mean being on the review board is costing them a lot of money? You didn't even read the article, did you?
Well, for our "ancestors" to get hit by this object, WE would need to send it back in time. I think you mean "descendants."

We do still use greek symbols for both math and physics... ;)
I didn't know that Nader advocated Communism. :P
That's like saying Bush advocates Fascism. FUD.

No offense, but if you can't spell their names correctly you have probably not spent enough time examining them.

AFAIK you cannot run IIS on Windows 98 (or even NT Workstation). So I would guess it is NT (Server-flavor that is), or maybe Windows 2000.
